Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...
I'm not much of a gamer myself but I see that OnLive is launching in the UK in June. With a broadband connection a PC, Mac or TV becomes an on-demand games console. Be interesting to see if Virgin and Tivo incorporate this when launched. It's something that Sky can't do and might even be Virgin's killer app.

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...
Anyone who is interested in Tivo have a listen tp the Engadget HD podcast episode 181 where they have a in depth discussion about Tivo in the US and really rip Tivo a new one and talk about how simple little things could make it so much better. Although none of those niggles will apply in the UK as Tivio will be integrated into the cable box.
However the most interesting thing was that they damned Tivo for yet again only having 2 tuners where they would have like anywhere form 4 to 8. The one thing that they did mention was that the main chip that the new boxes uses doesn't have enough grunt to run more then two tuners which is probably the reason we are not getting them here.

This was posted on DS but cannot find it on here so i thought i'd post it.

Expert Reviews (link), state that people visiting the Ideal Home Show in London will see their new TIVO system in action. It states...
'Finally, Virgin Media added that it will be giving a glimpse far into the future of the living room, including its next generation TV service using TiVo, as well as the option to move content from TV screens, to computer screens and even to mobile phones'
I have to say the ability to move content around sounds very interesting, esp. when Virgin Media are supporting Android in a big way next month with the release of two of Androids biggest handsets HTC Desire and Sony's Xperia X10.

It will be great to be able to watch cable tv in bed, save me having to stay up or record it.

TiVo Premiere review up on Engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/24/t...emiere-review/
Not too promising, but it'll probably still be better then the current V+ interface.

'Not too promising' - more like it sucks a fat one.
TiVO used to be great. I remember flogging UK Series 1 hardware to people who were utterly delighted by it. But as a small company lacking resources fighting against the cable companies substandard (but cheaper) DVR's, I think they're really on the back foot with this one. Unless they can get a solid dual core version of the the Premiere software out by the end of the year that covers the whole shebang, I think they're shot.
I'm beginning to wish VM had partnered with Moxi. But the Moxi mate wouldn't sit well with their multiroom strategy. Here's hoping that TiVO are actually focussing their resources on the VM TiVO system.

There are videos of the lag and although not the greatest start (it's something they will improve) it still outperforms our current EPG massively!

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...
The Samsung SMT-H3110 runs on the Linux kernel so when Virgin Media release the new software it will simply install on to these boxes as for Scientific Atlanta V+ boxes I'm afraid you may not get the software update as the processor is not powerful enough
but the more recent updates such as more TV channels are causing problems with the Scientific Atlanta Boxes anyway or so our VM Engineer said.
they said that they "have replaced 18 Scientific Atlanta V+ Boxes" in that week i got my Samsung V+ Box as Virgin Media no longer order Scientific Atlanta V+ Boxes they are hoping to slowly removing the Scientific Atlanta Boxes from Service .
this is because they will not be capable of the TiVo Interface

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...
Does anyone know when this new VM/TiVo box will be released?
My family is pushing me to buy a Sky+ box (with 12m subscription, I expect), but I'd like to see what VM have to offer before committing myself.

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...
Ours is a very old Scientific Atlanta V+ Box, but after replacing the card the other day with the new card, the picture quality on a few channels has gotten better. UK Gold now looks a lot better. It's still very slow and lags when flicking through the channels though.
