Thats a bit of a naughty story coming from the Murdoch stable!

That is exactly what sky done with TiVo having signed a deal to market and distribute TiVo sky then overpriced it and hardly marketed it,then a few months later sky bought out its own sky+ box,and TiVo in the uk was history.

Sky only bought into TiVo to get its hands on the technology, and now i guess they are suggesting virgin are going to do the same,i would be surprised TiVo having been bitten once and all that.

Yeah i agree. VM using TIVO is going to be a real usp and a big selling point over Skys interface. It's going to make Skys offering (even their new HD interface) look dated. It's going to be a massive card for VM to play and there is no way VM will go and launch their own second rate service and play second fiddle to Sky again when they can partner with Tivo and do it properly and successfully.

---------- Post added at 17:44 ---------- Previous post was at 17:42 ----------

It will be good to have access to Youtube etc through your tv because they have full episodes of your favourite series on there and in HD too. So if Sky was to pull the likes of Sky1 off again we can watch them through iptv delivery instead. After all Sky bought tv rights, they can't stop VM streaming them to their customers through the net! That would be great!

I am telling you now if VM won't have the broadcast or VOD rights you won't see via the Internet on your TV via the VM STB. That would be one hell of a rights mess for them.

One way they can exceed Tivo's specs is to use a larger hdd. 1TB is fine, but you can get 1.5TB and 2 for a fairly reasonable price now. I daresay soon, you'll be able to get 4.

Why would it though? There's loads of stuff out there on the internet already that people don't fight for rights over. It's just there not meaning things like canvas where deals are obviously in place. I heard somewhere that we will have full access to all of channel 4 od content instead of the limited amount already supplied.

So is it going to be limited youtube access then or......?

Put it this way, if you were the right holder and had paid for exclusive rights in the UK you wouldn't want the cable system being able to view it by other means. Just look at all the fuss that is going on in the US and Hulu.

But we can already view by other means already and for free too.

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...

Just because you can do it on a computer doesn't mean Virgin will let you do it on their STB. You are failing to realise companies pay big money for the rights to air programming and even if some show are available legitimately on the internet you can bet your bottom dollar that they only have internet streaming rights. VM would be hit with more law suites then they would know what to do with.

All the on-line content will only be available that VM has a deal in place for, even YouTube will restrict what can and can not be watched by this portal. I am only speculating but seeing as how companies like to protect their investments I can't see this happening any other way.

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...

i would say the right issue depends entirly in what format VM decide to take. IF they simply add a youtube portal accessable via the STB then yes the rights issue will very much bee there.

However IF VM simply allow the STB to browse the internet via a built in webbrowser then there the ONLY rights issue would bee with the website and NOT VM

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...

You will quickly find that these websites will start to block VM STB, Hulu already block mobile browsers http://www.techdirt.com/articles/200...30416199.shtml

Youtuble already do this for things that it detects that are mobiles and TVs http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100215/0234358166.shtml

NBC in the US has taken a case to congress to make sure Boxee is unable to show Hulu through its internet enabled box, even though Boxee said that it was running the service through a browsers just like on a PC. The sticking point seems to be when it is displayed on a TV as studios will have already sold those rights to others.

I use Windows media centre and a plug into see all the web TV streams for C4, ITV and C5 and control is awful not to mention the quality. If people complain about low bitrate on SD channels this is far far worse.

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...

I suppose one way for VM to exceed Tivo would be put DVDR or BDR(unlikely) in the PVR in the future or addon capabilities such as external HDD option to increase space or able to download content to media server for when you go on holiday.

I am suprised an all in one solution not been done in the past with DVDR's so cheap.

Another is if you seen goto my pc advert can you imagine if we had a setup which can access via the web your HOME TV anywhere in the world via internet connection. Being on a bus with your Mobile watching VM TV you subscribe or in some hotel room in the evening using the internet connecting to your service insteed watch some Turkish, spannish, cypriot tv channel you dont understand the language etc. Just some things which could give ideas what the future could hold.

Make content which you payfor in ONDemand to either watch price or OWN it outright. Sony does this on PSN you pay £11 to own the films fiver to stream.

Could be money making system to allow full purchase of content streamed.

I do know Sony been discusing some gaming experience with Internet links with cable companies in europe.

Can you imagine if the did put Bluray in we could watch bluray films too and become all in one solution for TV's no need for multi HDMI switcher for those with 1 HDMI.

Cable companies already gone PVR so surely the natural progression is to include a medium to burn or play DVD's/BD's or transfer your content.

---------- Post added at 23:56 ---------- Previous post was at 23:35 ----------

just to add some interesting comments from Virgin Media CEO Neil Berkett.

This certainly clarifys its the new Tivo software plus the TV box WILL replace the V+ at sometime in the future so its a TEST the water and a long standing relationship with Tivo.

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...

I don;t think we will see PVR with a burner in them in the UK, I know you can get them in the US as they have the cable card system so you just buy a third party box and plug in your card.

As for the internet suggestion, you will t be able to install software on your Tivo as it will most likely a closed system. You can buy a slingbox to do what you suggest however I believe that there is a big announcement waiting to be made by Virgin as they have signed up two broadcasters (Disney and Turner) for broadcasting, on-line and mobile rights.

Actually for me the V+ already out specs TiVo Premiere in the most important way, it only has 2 tuners!!!

Re: TiVO Premiere gives us a glimpse of what may be to come...

I hope that Virgin use the functionality and features of TiVo but have a different UI. I would like to see the concept UI that Virgin showed off, it was meant to allow linear and on demand programming to be merged into one and that is now possible with TiVo as their new features allow a user to search and watch linear, on demand and even videos from the Internet but for the user it is a seamless experience.

Unfortunately TiVo's new UI logic doesn't fit with this so I think the likelihood of getting this is nill. Saying that I think TiVo's UI is more functional (and uglier).

On a related note:

HP Brings TiVo Integration to Windows Home Server

HP MediaSmart Expander for TiVo® allows users to perform similar tasks with TiVo that Microsoft enabled in Windows Media Center following the release of Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 (which I find essential on a daily basis), including:
  • transferring shows from TiVo to a HP MediaSmart Server and back to TiVo
  • viewing TiVo recordings stored on a HP MediaSmart Server
  • watching TiVo recordings that are stored on the HP MediaSmart Server on any PC in the home using Windows Media Player

http://www.wegotserved.com/2010/03/1...ws-home-server

Please let the full TiVo functionality come with the V++ box, my MediaSmart really wants to get it on with my cable box.
