Highly unlikely for it to be completely custom, the samsung one is based on the same boards as used for a few of their HD PVRs, it's simply not cost effective to design a complete new box just for one provider when you can just repackage and rebadge an existing one.
The IECEE Test Certificate for the box was only issued at the start of november though, so it is an extremely new box. Guess I'll just have to wait for someone to take one apart before I can get all excited about the tech specs

I like the look of the box but the remote looks really cheap

Re: New HD box (non PVR)
I think there is a new remote due at some point, so the one in pictures is an interim thing

Re: New HD box (non PVR)
The all important question - how did you get it? and does it have a new UI/ EPG?
Thanks for the pics.
I hope more thought is put into the design and use of the new remote due.

Also longer(ish) term is whether it will be 3D compatible. After all ESPN is launching a 3D channel in time for the world cup (only in the US at the moment admittedly) and sky are going for 3D in a big way so would be good to have a virgin box out there that supported 3D.

Re: New HD box (non PVR)
While i was out... we had a Virgin sales guy call round. He said about a 'new' box and if we was interested. Apparently, it would save us money?? Hmm... Also, he asked the missus if there was any channels we didn't really watch? Err I'm happy with them all - in fact, give us the missing ones that Sky has, like the CBS channels!
He's never called back round, so I had it down as some scam! Maybe not...?

Any HDMI 1.3 device can be upgraded to 3D under the specs being used for 3D TV for Cable and Satellite companies. And seeing as Sky can not do 5.1 sound and video via HDMI I really don't know how they are intending to implement 3D.
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news...After_All/4002
HDMI only comes into play for 3D on Bluray apart form the PS3 which can drive two screens at 1080p so can already do this it just needs a firmware upgrade.

The remote is a thing of loveliness, but I'm still undecided about the box. (I've noticed that the only people who complain about the new remote are the people who haven't used one)

It's a new design. Another European operator is also using it, but I'm not sure whether they have launched yet.

Re: New HD box (non PVR)
The remote shown has V+ playback buttons on it, so they'd be unusable on this new box?
I have this remote and do find it better to use than the original V+ remote. Only problem I have is that all the buttons are the same shape and size, so you constantly have to look at the remote as not to press the wrong button.

I'd guess that they'd be useful for the On Demand content which is good. I don't have a problem with the original remote though, it's perfectly fine to use in my opinion.

the (new) remote pictured was supplied with the cisco box and works both it and my samsung v+ just fine, and vice versa the old remote works the new cisco box.
The 'v+' buttons are also used for VOD control.
