Re: New HD box (non PVR)
I think we are all going to have to agree to differ on this one.
There are probably a lot more people that think PVR's are the best thing since sliced bread but on the other hand there are benefits to having a non PVR HD box. The perfect example being those with a V+ and standard STB in another room.
I would like to congratulate VM on finding this niche in the market. Although freesat has been around for a while

Re: New HD box (non PVR)
Even with a 2nd STB there's a huge amount of benefits to having it as a pvr, such as the pause and rewind live tv functions. There aren't actually any benefit to having a non-pvr box (if you discount possible hardware failure, which shouldn't really come into it), just a non-need of the features.
I'm hoping that they're going the way of cable in the US though, where you can restart any program currently airing without needing a PVR, or having to have been tuned to the channel. If VM bring a functionality like Time Warner's start over to the UK market then they really could out manoeuvre sky as it's the sort of killer feature that sky has no answer to.

Power saving? Space saving? Lack of noise?
If you want a PVR in every room, have one. If you don't, don't. Simple.

It costs £10 per month to replace the 2nd STB with a V+ when you're a VIP customer. The potential of no extra monthly fee would be the main benefit for me! A 2nd V+ would be great otherwise...

After suffering the hell of a v+ I think this will be great for people like myself who would like HD and can't be bothered with the extra hassle that certain pvr boxes bring.

Looks like a impressive feature but also states that it is only on some channels, so looks like they need to sign a deal so I can't see this available on many channels should VM implement it here.

Component connections will be discontinued from this year and remaining analogue connections from 2013.

Do you have a source for that? I'll agree that component is dead because of copy-protection problems, but I believe SCART will be around for a long time.

It'd probably be easy to tie it into the catch up deals as essentially it's the same sort of time shifting, so any channel covered by catch up should have it.
Obviously you'd never see it on the Sky channels, but the basic channels, their varients, and the VMTV ones should be pretty easy to sort it out for.

Component has obviosouly been removed from the latest V+ and i cant see it being on any newly produced models now. Your are right it's dead.
Scart is dying, it wont be long. Look at the new Samsung TV's....one scart only. 4 HDMI and only one scart...a clear indication that it is now the second choice and a dying method of connection.

I'm sure TV manufacturers would love us to all buy new TVs, but unfortunately for them TVs have a very long life. SCART will be around until the vast majority of TVs have HDMI.
Think about this: SCART has been around for 30 years, yet we still got complaints when we removed RF from the V+.

I asked the samsung reps at the DSGi product roadshow in harrogate last year, why they had moved to only having one scart socket on the current range and none on some of the LEDs.
the reply was that Scart is only used in Europe and is an analogue connection, which is being phased out
