V+ not so good in SD

Hello, I had Virgin media installed today, the HD is amazing but the SD picture is fuzzy compared to my sky box which was an SD box and was connected by scart.

Oh no i meant V+ not so good in SD woops.

make sure the V+ box is connected via HDMI and that the box is set to a HD resolution under the display and sound settings (1080 wide or 720 wide).

after doing this make sure you re calibrate your tv for the V+ box. the compression methods are different compared to SKY so the tv settings will be different. all devices display things slightly differently and as such the tv needs re calibrating to allow for that.

another thing is the V+ box tends to have a slightly softer image as apposed to the SKY HD box due to the different output methods (V+ is MPeg 2 the Sky HD box is MPeg 4).

I kept mine on 1080. SD looked poor on 1080 wide...

Re: V+ not so good in SD

I've never understood why people use the wide settings. People want the best possible picture with HD and then stretch it out of shape for some reason

They don't like the black bars down the sides

Re: V+ not so good in SD

I have fixed the problem and OMG it looks awesome even in SD, was watching the England game and switched from sky box to V+ BOX and wow, the difference was massive!

To sort out the fuzzy picture I reduced the sharpness.

Thanks Joff81

4:3 material will be stretched to fill the screen. I use 720 wide, would rather stretch 4:3 material than have black bars down each side.

It may look fine to you but it IS stretched out of proportion, as that's exactly what the wide settings do.

Same here too, i can't stand the black bars on the sides, and would much rather have it fill my telly.

It might be stretched a little bit, but it really doesn't look that noticeable. I am sure the V+ also stretches it vertically slightly to make it not look too bad.

Re: V+ not so good in SD

You'll be able to tell that is the channel DOG is out of position.

I hate seeing stretched images so I always have things set to display in their native aspect ratio. I'd rather have black bars down the side than Arthur Lowe looking more rotund that he really was when Dads Army is on

Re: V+ not so good in SD

Each to their own I guess - I prefer to see an undistorted image as the footage was shot. Also, the width-wise upscaling would be more than the height upscaling on an SD image which I would prefer to avoid. But what you do in the comfort of your own home is your own business.

Question for the 'wide' people though - do you stretch movies vertically to remove the bars at the top and bottom of the screen?
