Why does the SA box have MORE leds lit on standby?

So when I'm trying to sleep I put the SA (Scientific Atlanta) V+ box into standby mode to save power and noise on the HDD. But when I do so, even brighter/more LED light shines out of the front of it (around the right hand side near the buttons) to indicate that it is in standby mode. Why would you want this? When trying to sleep it is brighter like this than normal by quite a bit. Can I change this?
Also, I find I can't actually get it to go into standby at the moment and it is not due to record anything. Any ideas?

I agree it's a bit of a silly for them to do. You gotta decide between hard dri e noise all night or lights all night lol. Not sure what u mean though when you say u can't get ur box into standby even when not recording but u get the whole standby light procedure. Someone may know

You should be able to put it in standby even if it is recording something

Re: Why does the SA box have MORE leds lit on standby?

I know a solution, stick some thick black card or of course electrical tape over the offending LEDS. If you are handy with the scissors you could make a neat job. simples

Re: Why does the SA box have MORE leds lit on standby?

To be fair to the OP, I was equally incredulous when I first got V+. It's really quite stupid. I just learned to live with it.

Re: Why does the SA box have MORE leds lit on standby?

My new Samsung box is better in that when in standby it doesn;t have any bright LEDs.
Oh well. Yeah it goes into standby OK now most of the time. If I ever open up my SA box to upgrade the HDD then I might look at trying to turn off some of the LEDs. Reason I don't unplug it over night is that it records stuff late at night and early morning and I don;t want to wait ages for it to boot up and download the TV guide etc.
