Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

1 bad thing i've noticed, bravo2 has gone down from 192bit audio to 128bit audio and 522x576 instead of 544x576. As if the quality of bravo couldn't get any worse!

Maybe the only reason they have a pocketful of HD users is that they only have one HD channel!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

this is a bit OT but Sky only have about 700,000 HD users which is a very small number of people. Considering VM have less users than Sky and the HD market is smaller you have to look at how many actual HD users VM would have. It's only a small number of people that keep asking on this thread all the time so I don't think the investment is worth it until they can see a genuine return

I totally agree with the Bravo2 thing, i was just watching TNA Wrestling, and the image looks zoomed in on bravo2 (even though in the USA it was filmed & broadcast in HD) but
when its on Bravo channel, it looks great for SD

i would have another check at those figures especially after the £49 sky+HD offer they have been running. the figures now are over 1m either with skyHD or signed up and getting skyHD.

the other thing is that SD TV`s are alomost non existant to purchase retail now which means that the install base of "HD Ready" tv`s is going up every day. with Sky running their HD promotion along side the sale of these HD tv`s then the demand for HD content is growing everyday. to be honest in the last 2 weeks i know about 10 housholds that have swapped to sky due to this HD promotion that were VM subscribers so from my point of view VM are loosing a ratio of 10:1 customers due to lack if HD, infact the original group of us (friends and family) that got VM installed at around the same time there is only 2 of us that have not ran to sky.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I agree with joff,I know of at least 5 people who bought HD ready tvs over Christmas,3 of them signed up to VM,blissfuly unaware of the almost total lack of HD content. The picture improvemrnt of their new sets and the V+ box even fooled 2 of them that they actually were watching HD.A friend invited me round to see his new wonder tv and the astonishing (compared to his old crt set) picture quality.Even the giant notice on 108 that he was watching in SD did'nt worry him,he honestly thought it was something to do with his tv's settings, which he spent about 1/2 an hour fiddling with.I have a spare HDMI lead and and sorted him out. After discovering the aweful truth about our HD content he is switching to Sky.The point is how many other people think the same? The upscaling of the V+ may be fooling a lot of people, when they realise it,they'll just jump ship.VM need to get their fingers out sharpish regarding HD or it'll be like rats deserting a sinking ship! If people buy a HD tv they expect to see HD programmes.

Where are you getting these figures from ?

According to SKy themselves

http://corporate.sky.com/documents/0...eb126b6c09c7e1

They have 779,000

I am aware that you can't buy a SD TV anymore but plenty of people that purchase new TVs are satisfied with the extra channels from freeview and the upscaling that the TV does. You also need to take account of the fact that not everyone can afford to pay the extra cost for pay TV in the first place. Plenty of people may sign up to these deals but they might not stick with the contract and can end up leaving as circumstances change

Just because you want HD doesn't mean the entire nation does and is no reason for VM to bankrupt themselves in offering it.

Sky's take up of HD is only 8.4% of their customer base and with VM having a lower customer base I would assume the VM take up would be lower than that

those figures were taken before December 31st as thats when the presentation was made and thos out of date figures produced. since then (beginnig last week of january this year) there has been a big promotion on SKY+HD (sky+HD box for £490. the best part is the normal sky+ box is still £75 so its ceaper to get a sky+HD box. infact its so big that there is a 8-10 week waiting lost to actually get sky+HD installed. people are leaving VM by the dozen as i said i know 10 housholds in the last 2 weeks that have left due to this offer alone and it does not need a genius to work out that VM are loosing lots of customers due to lack of HD and Sky`s big promotion on HD.

people wanting HD due to this offer has grown beyond what even sky predicted so much so that they cant keep up with demand. also the offer gets better as if you buy a HD tv from selected stores (currys, PC world, Asda etc) the Sky HD offer is only £29. jsut by looking at this alone you shold know fine well that the numbers will be well over 1m by now just to promotional sales alone.

AFAIK those are the latest figures available from Sky. You also have to allow for churn, just because someone signs up to a new deal for HD doesn't mean they will see out the contract and also people could be coming to the end of their deals \ contacts and due to the credit crunch could be leaving Sky. Until Sky announce any new figures I will stick with those rather than a made up figure based on what your mates and yourselves have done. That's why Sky don't announce figures all the time, as yes new people sign up, but also people leave.

According to Sky, churn is currently at 10% and with the credit crunch there is a chance this could get even higher

The VM 2008 results don't come until next week.

***** you cant go by out of date stats that are most likely 3 months out of date already.
use some common sense and stop being pessamistic the truth is all us with VM have backed the wrong horse and now we eitther sit it out or get out and move sky afterall for HD its been proven the sky is the place to be and the £49 offer makes it all the easier to move.

im not with SKY im with VM so get your facts right !!!!

but the truth is this £49 HD promotion is having a bigger effect than anyone thought it would me included.
i was in town today and the Sky sign up booth had a que of about 30 people so its having a bigger impact than you and VM think it is.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I've been reading this with interest, and thought I'd put my pennyworth in.

I have an HD TV, and like many here I expect, think the upscaling of the V+box is pretty good.

It would be nice if Virgin did offer more channels in HD, but I believe the entire HD sytem is still in its infancy at the moment. If Virgin went down the Sky route and said we could have more HD channels, but had to pay an extra subscription for it, how many of us would honestly sign up ? - I wouldn't. HD is nice, but there are more important things to worry about.

In my opinion, sky have HD - Virgin has Iplayer, and Catch up - and out of the two, I believe Virgin offers me more

we appear to have gone off topic here as this doesn't relate to any channels coming soon so I think if we want to discuss this further we should do that in a new thread
