Re: Iplayer

What do you mean by archive? For that matter I'm a bit suspicious, is this just duplicating catch up tv on demand on the iPlayer platform to try and phase out the other system? If it is something physically new then that's great. If it's more iPlayer hype I'm not so chuffed.

As per the link above. The online version of iPlayer has had this series stacking for a while where they hold all episodes until 7 days after the last is shown and that this is now available on iPlayer on VM. Don't think it has much to do with phasing out anything.

Re: Iplayer

Well it wasn't just that andrewcrawford, I was on the BBC archive trial a while back where archive has a slightly different meaning .

If it makes iPlayer more usable for those that do on VM (I don't like the UI at all) then that's good . Glad they've doing work on it at anyrate.

Re: Iplayer

I agree. Some old documentaries or other stuff would be great on vod. The beeb tv choice on demand is very stale. I know other channels they probably add/remove stuff too quickly but with the beeb that really is a case of things staying the same for too long.

Interesting VM is a third of iPlayer views. I do use it, just not the iPlayer interface (not sure whether they count my stats of not).

Re: Iplayer

The '7 days' came originally from some sort of licencing agreement - It sounds like this has been modified somehow

P.S. I do remember it was illegal to keep a video recording for more than one month (again due to broadcast licencing/copyright laws) - although most people didn't realise, it was in fact an offence & you could be prosecuted

As far as i know the law has not been revoked

Actually, series stacking is something that was planned for when the iPlayer first launched (in fact, I believe it was part of the iMP, but I wasn't a part of that), but the BBC Trust wouldn't allow it for some reason that I can't remember.

I would imagine that the BBC have been trying to get stacking as part of the rights packages for some of their programmes for a while now, in the hope that the Trust would budge.

There are limits on how the quantity and type of the programming the BBC can offer stacked - Wikipedia's iPlayer article seems to be accurate, so I'll quote: "The BBC Trust has permitted 15% of content to be offered as part of the stacking service; soaps, news bulletins and review-based programmes will not be stacked, as well as programmes containing material of a legal nature, such as Crimewatch."

Re: Iplayer

It's probably something stupid like it stops commercial channels (ironically like Dave and G.O.L.D) showing series that may be stacked on the iPlayer

Re: Iplayer

I like the bbc iplayer, I think it is a brill platform, also u can use it anywer on the web, so its not limited, And its quicker than Catch up oon demand, I usually do nightshift, and finish at midnight, well by that time everything is usually over, anyway, Catch up does not have wat i want to watch for at least 12-24hrs sometimes, as for i player its on within 30-60mins,Also u can watch all off the series at anytime wen u want, soi think its the best, only if all the other channels started to follow the bbc lead, it would make tv more fun,

Re: Iplayer

iPlayer on vm does not always add quicker than catch up, it is the other way round sometimes.

Anyway I had a use of the stacking last night, Oceans and Horizon were on there, pretty cool idea in theory.

Re: Iplayer

Given we have HD VOD on the V+ and BBC HD why can we not have BBC iplayer in HD?

It's a question that has been asked to the head of BBC HD (both present and past) and there has been no answer. I think some of it is probably rights issues as there have been so many e.g. the olympics not on iPlayer or The Tudors not on VM iPlayer but on the internet one. BBC HD is also now on BARB ratings where unfortunately the ratings for flagship progs that have been simulcast has been extremely feeble. I hope this doesn't put them off these sort of ventures as I believe the demand is there.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/ne...HD-Channels/p1 mentions iPlayer. I frankly don't believe them though.
