Now that is even better to hear as it means that the local thieves have lost their free television.

As always companies drag their heels when they should be embracing new technology.

One person sharing files does not make a difference directly.
However, what happens is that one person shares it. Ten people download it, then share it. Ten people download from each of them (so we have 110 people sharing it now), and Ten people download from each of them. Now we have over 1,000 people sharing the original file. A couple of steps down the line, we will have 100,000. A couple of further steps and we could be up to 1 million.
1 person sharing a file will not directly make a difference. A few steps down the line, when thousands of people are sharing the file (and this is how Bit torrent works by default: You share everything you download), companies start going bankrupt and all of a sudden all those singers, songwriters, actors etc are losing money. A lot of money.

Know someone who saved £20,000 doing that lol

That's £20,000 thats not going to bands and singers who may need it..

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?
That's an argument for another thread...
In the end though if you use your internet connection for copyright infringement they can find out and they can take action based on their own Terms and conditions in your contract.
Now lets get back on topic please which is Dodgy Boxes (i.e.. using modified or non-standard equipment to get services that has not been paid for)

I've had two colleagues (and my mum i'm ashamed to say!) complaining their boxes are no longer working. I wonder how long it will be before VM and Sky are reporting record profits

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?
A question people could ask themselves is why Virgin/Ntl etc left the network unsecured for so long?
Could it be that they were getting subs to phone and internet and the illegal boxes were actually costing sky money?
Another advantage was these boxes had was they were actually better quality and were updated more often than the official set top boxes.

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?
Or could it be it is because Virgin (and NTL before them) are a conglomeration of smaller Cable companies, which came together due to the industry consolidation of the 90's and 00's, and it takes time to standardise everything?

Plus it's very expensive to change encryption systems / card swaps etc.

He did it to wind his friend up. He never told him who i work for or what it is i do.
He told him i might have an answer for his problem.

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?
So now all these dodgy boxes are going down would you think there will be an uptake of proper VM TV, if so would that mean VM would reduce their price.
Or do you think they would now go to Sky or BT as the dodgy boxes was just used on the line while they used phone line and broadband.
So if more leave VM would price's go up.

Without going in to too much detail... subscriber growth is healthy in areas where dodgy boxes are getting bricked
Prices aren't going to come down, but more subscribers means more revenue, more revenue means they can invest more in the network, channels, VOD and customer experience, plus better hardware.

That's good to hear. As a result of the 'amnesty' on dodgy box owners, results have been good.
I hope, however, that there will be no further amnesty for those that are now choosing card sharing to defraud Virgin Media and that Virgin Media will pursue these people ruthlessly.

Fully agree with you other wise they have wasted a hell of a lot of money in doing this last card swap
