Back on topic please

Can I also suggest the members watch their language as the swear filter is to catch mistakes and not to enable people to type what they will

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

just helped stop the sale of 2 boxes over of Hotukdeals, the same user saying it was an unflashed free to air cable box, so he wasnt doing anything wrong.

will the free to air channels be encrypted too?

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

On VM digital there is no such thing as free channels, even the M package is a subscription package that you get free with the phone line. No card/official box then no channels

Thats like saying if VM left a blunt kitchen knife on the pavement and someone picked it up, sharpened it and murdered someone then it would be VM's fault.

i admit that leaving boxes with customers was not a good idea but that isn't an open invitation to commit fraud.

Here's another classic from the home of the cable thieves,

Quote:
es thats right , dickie as brought in some software that deletes the channels for you automatically.the only way to get them back would be to give him your bank details , and hey presto your channels come back.now thats magic.
At least there starting to understand this is the end for them

But this one is even funnier
Quote:
Since the first N3 cards got sent out and reported on here, I've been explaining to immediate family why my nice HTPC set up will be severly downgraded within the next few months. Consequently I've been explaining to brother-in-law's what N1 and N3 are, and why all dodgy cable boxes are going to be useless very soon.

I was therefore somewhat surprised when last week one of them told me about this great thing he's bought - a brand new dodgy box for his bedroom! He even told me that he remembered what I'd said to him about the encryption method, but he asked the bloke in the shop about it and the bloke told him it's running the latest version of the software and they've got "all that stuff" sorted and not to worry - so he handed over the money! I explained to him that N3 hasn't been cracked and the box will NOT work when our area goes over, but he's adamant - the bloke in the shop said it'll be alright! I even brought up this website to show him all the "N3 = useless box" threads but he's still sure it'll keep working.

He's buying extra cabling and adding it into the existing feed to his house to feed the signal into the bedroom this weekend and hopes to have the TV up and running by mid-week. I hope he thinks the three figure sum he paid out is worth it for the month or two it's up and running.
.

no it isnt what a stupid thing to say. Even without the possibilty of fraud the boxes should still be picked up as they have material value

The fact that I disagree with you isn't personal. I didn't call what you had to say stupid for example!, or threw my toys out of the pram by leaving a rude negative reputation comment.

The point you made was about fraud and that it is only VM's fault because they didn't pick the boxes up. I disagree with this and provided an example to try and explain why. I think the example works quite well actually.

The blunt kitchen knife = Vbox
Sharpened it = modded it illegally
Murdered someone with it = Committed fraud by stealing cable

Alright maybe it was a tad silly but surely you can see the point.

Shops leave goods on the shelves, does that mean its not my fault if I steal them as the shop has left them there for me to steal. I totally agree that not collecting these boxes was a mistake (as I said before) but you can't say that makes VM to blame for cable fraud.

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

you are totally missing the point and doing it deliberately.

Items in shop are still in the shop they are not "leased" to a customer and not collected when the lease ends. VM and its predecessors know that these boxes they leave uncollected can be modified and used for illicit purposes. I actually owned a chipped analogue box so its not something new. VM and to an extend their staff are responsable for leaving these boxes in circulation

I will give you an example. I had V+ and a V box I called and said I no longer wanted V+ just leave the v box on my account. That was fine but they never picked up the V+ box. A few months later I called and asked then to switch the V+ box back on . I was told there was no record of this box ever being here. Now I could have simply got it modded if I wanted and VM wouldnt have a clue. It would have been there fault for leaving the box here which has a value even if its just stripped for the hard disk

I make no concession for stupidity If I wave my wallet around in a pub then leave it unattended on my table I accept its my fault for leaving it there if it goes missing( which is a damn site better analogy than yours in relation to the topic )
