Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Well Dunno If Anyone Said it But the Reason These Boxes Cannot Be Banned Is Because They are FTA recievers that Can Be Flashed With Firmware.

If you buy them It Tells you to Accept the T&C's that you wont use it for recieving Illegal Cable.. So Theres a Lot Of fibbers who ticked that

2) Like the Guy Said Earlier Unfortunately there will Always be ways to get the service free and It Will not stop

3) Although I pay A stupidly Large Bill For Sky+HD here.. and Half of the bill for V+ at my Mothers I Do Not Show Anger at People who steal it..

People Steal Services because they are not Willing to Pay the Stupid Price For TV services Nowadays.. A TV licence is one thing but the prices these days are just plain silly

As for The Whole Make It like Sky.... Trust me Sky Isnt 100% FoolProof..

Anyone Who Actually Thinks the TV prices are reasonable Should Slap themselves for me

People Can Only be Caught Via Getting Grassed Up as I believe the Boxes Only Recieve and Dont Send anything back

And This Cannot be Solved by Simply Banning All Starviews and What have you in the UK and Saying You can Just get a recording Freeview Box If your Using them Legit... That Wont work Because Most Of the Boxes are shipped

It does However Come to the Point where it seems these Companies Know exactly what There Boxes are Being Used as and Upgrade the Fookers to HD!!

As long as it stops for Christmas and it spoils their kids day being unable to watch free TV then I for one will be happy.

So what you are saying is that as long something is stupidly over priced it's Ok to steal it

Can't see that holding up in court some how.

By the way I think £200+ for a new replacement Sky+ HD box is way over priced so can I come and take yours

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Am I alone in hoping they all go down after close of business on christmas eve? There's gotta be a fair amount of people that only have a dodgy box with no other way to watch tv.

Only some of the boxes are 3rd party most are modified VM boxes . I do not think the new encryption will be a simple flash to get around it. I am sure I have read the popular European box is not flashable to cover Nagra 3 in countries its been implimented

As far as connection these 3rd party boxes its against terms to connect them to VM equipment however I do not know if its actually illegal to connect them though. But modified cable boxes are the property of Vm (although they write them off and perhaps expect you to stick them in the loft forever) makes at best owning one receiving stolen goods which is criminal

That would be perfect as the may not be much on over Christmas but all kids love to watch tv at that time and it would be poetic justice that they are turned into doorstops at that time.

Even if fault were open once they realised it was a chipped box they would be reported and disconnected from Virgin anyway.

Pretty much all of them are capable of being flashed to support an n3 softcam, however, none actually exist. If n3 is ever cracked then it would be trivial to update most of the boxes to actually support it, but the prospects of n3 getting hacked are looking quite slim as it's took a hell of a beating already and stood up to it pretty well. So, it would be a simple flash, IF n3 is ever compromised.

As for if it's actually illegal to connect them, yes, it is. The copyright act creates an offense of "fraudulently receiving programmes" which states:

(1) A person who dishonestly receives a programme included in a broadcasting or cable programme service provided from a place in the United Kingdom with intent to avoid payment of any charge applicable to the reception of the programme commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale.

Really? You were just on techwatch not so long ago bragging (well lying) about having a chipped sky box w/a chipped card so who knows what to believe.

In the end the encryption may get hacked but in the meantime it will take out a lot of novices out there and maybe earn Virgin some extra revenue.

I have also been watching the increase in desperation posts on that site as well. Its gone from they will never do it to well it might take them years to there will be a fix soon to what other option do we have.

Another well known forum has started openly talking about a subject that has been for years a taboo subject and involves VM's main rival.

Yes there desperate and i love it.
