Virgin Media set-top box needs re-booting every day. V+ box an improvement?

Otherwise it fails to collect EPG info, and also tends to hang. I have discussed it with VM customer services, but they don't think it's the box (so logically it's ther service)

Now, I want to upgrade to a V+ box, so we don't need to buy a new DVD recorder. VM are currently charging £75 for this, and there would be no monthly charge, as we currently get their XL package anyway.

But my husband says we should just buy a HDD DVD recorder (£200 for a decent model), because the V+ box will just have the same probs as we currently have.

Anyone got any experience of this?

Re: Virgin Media set-top box needs re-booting every day. V+ box an improvement?

Yeah my Pace box was exactly like that, sometimes needed booting many more times a day than once. It didn't handle the EPG or mini menu particularly well either. The SA was a bit better but not much.

The V+ still crashes occasionally and it is sluggish the first few minutes after boot up i.e. it gets stuck on a channel for a few minutes and can take 10 mins to populate the EPG. On the whole thought it is substantially more stable and handles the vod menus better. The v+ isn't perfect.

HDD recorders have the added advantage that it is yours. The v+ has a microscopic 160Gb hard drive in that you cannot upgrade other than that and it being mpeg2 it's a fantastic piece of kit.

TBH I'm attracted by being able to pause live TV.

We have a 9 y.o. son, and I frequently miss the beginning of programmes, dealing with teeth-cleaning/bedtimes etc.

Oh, and are their any negotiating tips to get V+ for free?

Not sure if that’s the right price. I was told £150 last week when my channels 1-5 vanished. I can’t see a price for it on the website.

Threaten to leave sometimes works. Tbh, paying the one off payment of £75 is well worth it.

You're joking!

V+ box still plays up from time to time, also a pain around 01:00 where it decides to freeze out the controls from anywhere from a couple of mins to 30+ mins - need to press reset if you don't want to wait - if you do wait all the commands it has buffered up and plays them out.

Several other annoying issues too.

Hmm, I don't suffer from these issues, not since a couple of downloads ago.

2bh you cant expect anyone to answer your questions as it sounds like its a fault with your receiver & it wouldnt be fair to compare a faulty receiver to a working one. if not then its an area fault & getting a new receiver wont fix the problem at all. your best bet is to keep on at VM till they send out an engineer or borrow a known to be working receiver & see if it does the same, then you'l know for sure

Well yes, the remote locking out at 1 a.m. wouldn't bother us either, as long as the V+ doesn't forget to record anything you have requested.

Well engineers have been out twice in the last 3 months. 1 claimed it was a fault in our area, which would be fixed when our local servers were upgraded. TBH it has improved a bit since his visit, and I know I ought to spend half a day on the phone to report it again, and try to get a new box (ours is an old black one), but ploughing your way thru to customer services is just soooo mind-numbing .....

In honesty, I do want V+, but I don't want to spend £75 and end up with the same problems.
