V+ HDMI Version

Hi There,

Just bought a new Sammy TV that supports V1.3 HDMI. Now i'd be rather amazed if the V+ box supports this however i seriously doubt it. My question is does anyone know what HDMI version the V+ does support? Virgin are sending a HDMI cable when it gets installed to my abode next week but i was rightly or wrongly assuming the cable will be of low grade quality and wanted to buy a decent cable to maximise the picture & sound as much as possible. Not sure if i need to or if anyone can recommend a good HDMI cable to get.

Help appreciated and i'm quite new to all this HDMI so forgive me if i'm barking up the wrong tree.

Cheers.

Re: V+ HDMI Version

Hi,

as HDMI cables are digital its not really possibly to get a low grade cable. They either work or they don't.

I can't remember off hand but I think the V+ box is V1.2 HDMI.

The cable I got when I had my V+ installed had gold plated connectors.

Re: V+ HDMI Version

I believe the HDMI version is backwards compatable, as for the cable don't worray about it, unless you need the cable to go a really long way the it won'y make a difference.

The gadget shoe did a really goog test, showed that the really cheep cables were just as good as £100 monster cables.

It's worth noting that for digital cables the signal either gets through or doesn't.

Actually, this is just a general point for everyone. While good cabling does make a difference for analogue signals, there are a lot of people who tell you don't need expensive cables even in that case.

A friend of mine has done a lot of work with high end Audio systems and reckons that the best speaker cable (for instance) is actually standard two wire mains cable (with the external insulation), because the insulation required for safety actually ensures very low signal loss.

Also, bear in mind Ethernet Cables. You can get these for as little as £2 or £3 for 5 metres, and they have to ensure little signal loss for distances of up to 100 metres.

It is true that digital signals are fundamentally more noise-immune than analog (by their nature), Nevertheless, it's not quite a simple as either it works or it doesn't in a digital system.

A bitstream can be subject to jitter and pulse-shaping problems.

Jitter may be generated at source (irrespective of cabling) affects the data recovery and can lead to clocking problems and therefore manisfest itself as click or pops in an audio system.

Pulse shaping problems can be due to signal degradation due to poor quality cable or shielding. These can result in increasing bit-error rate. These errors may, or may not be recoverable. Effects may be blocking, break-up or freezing in a video system.

Therefore, assuming that you do not see such errors, then the chances are your cable is good enough. Assuming that it is mechnically sound (i.e. not about to fall into pieces)!! So, perhaps, the original statement is a reasonable approximation in practice, after all!!!!

So any appropriately specified digital cable should be adequate for transmission of the digital signal.

I'll get me coat.
