I suppose with the quality of Setanta picture their HD channel will be the equivalent to an SD channel

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV
What is all this with the quality of Setanta's pictures? I can assure you they look just fine on a 28" CRT. It's not Setanta's fault if you've all bought tv's that are too high spec to show a standard picture well.
It's a hell of a lot better than watching the football on ITV1 or ITV4 and that's for sure.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV
setanta isnt as good qual as itv1, the bitrate is just too low. ITV4 uses lower 544x576 resolution and an even lower bitrate than itv1 so the quality is extremely bad. Setanta are cheapskates, sky sports looks great, high bitrate and high quality, bbc1 sports looks good too with 4.5mbps.
Eurosport HD is only around 11mbps, bbchd and sky sports hd use around 16mbps so eurosport looks pretty bad in comparison.

Franky with such a microscopic and dated TV it will blur over pretty much anything. You could stick a video CD on it and it wouldn't look much different to a DVD.
Thing is though, the world has moved on. CRTs are dead, and the fastest growing area of the TV market are 42" LCDs. You've got to move with the times, SD is on it's way out.

You are falling into the trap of equating bitrate with picture quality just like you do with setanta. If high bitrate were always a good picture quality then setanta sports1 would look gorgeous (it usually has a higher bitrate than BBC1 actually). It looks worse than any other channel that shows football such as sky sports hd, sky sports, five, bbc hd, bbc1/2, ITV1,ITV4.
Similarly Eurosport HD is not bad because it has 11Mbs. BBC HD is not anything special in HD it is just average picture quality in HD (still great) whilst hogging bandwidth, it gets less wow per Mbs than most of the other HD channels. Even if you were correct and Eurosport HD were pants it is a lot better than ITV4 or Eurosport SD when I watched the tour de france and it is perhaps one of the channels VM could get hold of.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV
Eurosport HD is very bad, its like an upscaled SD, just isn't good. BBCHD is good, not perfect, Sky Sports HD is VERY good. Setanta has a lower bitrate than BBC sports and sky sports but the encoders are the biggest problem yes.
Channel4HD have been airing alot of content in 9.5-11.5mbps recently, not the best. Ofcom should make it mandatory for all HD channels to have a minimum of 16mbps then we could have good quality HD on all channels.
Instead it looks like these channels are scrimping on cost by lowering bitrate but getting good P.R and subscriptions because its "HD".
I'll be happy with ITVHD, Channel4HD, EurosportHD coming to virgin tho even if the bitrate is low because football on itv is at such a low bitrate and quality it can be a choir to watch sometimes. Eurosport in 2mbps 544*576 is an embarrasment, especially in 4:3. Channel4 usually looks pretty decent, they dont really do sports so hard to tell how good their channel would look if football was aired on there for example.
Hopefully we'll find out shortly what the 4 new channels will be

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV
i dont see what you changed from how it was yesterday, maybe you could give new info in a new post as well so those of us who have read these 63 pages dont have to re-read a massive first post each time trying to recognise what has changed.
thanks.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV
See post 2. Anyway it is new news, since previous updates we've had two separate reports of the four or "three or four hd channels" from Mr Burkett. MTVNHD has also just launched on Sky too. Thanks Media Boy.

i'm sure if Sky ever get a decent VOD system they will have a great advert explaining what it is and the benefits and all the VM users will be wishing they had something like that

For the record I have a 32" Sony CRT TV and the picture on football matches is rubbish, at times the pitch moves faster than the ball.

If one person has a good picture and you dont it sounds like it needs investigating. Unless his idea of quality is rather different from your own.
I would check your settings out and then maybe call 151 to see if they can resolve it.

I suspect it's down to how fussy people are over picture quality. I have a really high end 1080p 50" Pioneer plasma, and have shown my parents very high quality BDs on it. While they can see the difference between it and SD, they aren't in any way bothered or impressed. On the other hand I think the gulf in quality between SD and HD is so colossal I avoid SD at all costs now.
Some people just have a lower quality threshold.
