Re: V+ recordings! I am at end of my tether

Most PC HDD are not enterprise level hard disks and are not designed to be on 24/7. Enterprise hard disk are only a bit more expensive but are dsigned to be on 24/7. I've always used enterprise level disks for PVRs or NAS drives just that bit more reliable.

Spinning the drives up after going into power save is more stressful also have a vague memory that it has something to do with the heads being parked and unparked.

With regards to speed slower or faster dirves or no more or less reliable for storeing data.

Jethro is correct disks for PVRs / DVRs should use a large block size as possible, this also reduces fragmentation problems for PVRs where files are constantly recorded and deleted.

Yes I know, but it was you that said

DVR drives have considerably less files to handle than a regular PC drive
Therefore making a distinction between a Hard Drive in PVR and a Hard Drive in a PC.

My point was that the Sky+ boxes used standard Hard Drives you could find in any bottom end PC, not Hard Drives that would be used in Video Editing work or Servers where increased data access would be required etc.

You would not want to use a server class hard disk in a PVR why would you need a hard disk designed for high speed read writes in a PVR? Apart from being expsensive they would be a lot louder and of no real benefit to the system.

Main thing for a PVR is noise, reliability and the cluster size used when formating the drive.

The read / write capacity of a hard disk is well above the requirements for reading and writing mulitple video data streams, hard disks can easily average 60 - 80 MB/s thats 6 -8 DVD streams

I don't doubt it.

At the moment though, if anything drives in PVRs are older and slower than PC Drives.

Quite possibly, you have to struggle to get a 80 / 160 GB disk for you PC, I get that really anoyned me about the sky+ upgrade from 80gb to 160gb and the huge price hike

You think that is bad, have you seen how much a Xbox360 120Gb drive costs compared with a proper one?

Yep complete ripoff, I sure MS have some really good reasons for it (probably the fact that people will pay it)
