If your box is legit, and they change the encoding, you'll get a new box. You don't need to know.

Virgin wont issue new boxes, they will simulcrypt, when the kit is capable of it. This means the two encryption systems work in parallel, with two sets of ECM's being sent out per channel, one set of ECM's work with the old cards. A new card is all that will be sent out to everyone, the second set of ECM's work with the new cards. Once all the new cards are out there, the old encryption can then be turned off.

Hasn't the Nagra 2 format already been cracked in other parts of Europe anyway???

As a subscriber I don't really have any bones with people who steal TV and I freely admit to stealing TV from other countries where I cannot legitimately subscribe, it doesn't adversely affect other legitimate subscribers in the way broadband theft does and may, if a more secure CAS is rolled out, produce more subscribers who've got used to having pay tv where they wouldn't previously have considered it due to cost.

I'm not advocating pay-tv theft which can be subscribed to locally, it just doesn't prick the same nerve as broadband theft does. The small amount Virgin charge isn't worth the hassle and it usually means no on-demand which is the best part of VM's TV service and worth the subscription costs on its own.

As for the topic, it's much more likely to be N3 if they do change systems (unlikely considering past form) but they really should consider moving away from Nagravision and utilise some kind of CA wrapping, even N3 is proving to be insecure, although it is a huge improvement over N2.

No one has ever cracked an encryption. What they have done is found back doors into cards which have ultimately allowed them to access the Master Keys.
I'm sure Virgin will be looking this time for a system where the revisions of card haven't been used in other countries. The UK was opened up due to backdoors found in revisions of cards used in Spain and South America.

Re: Nagra 2/3

dont they use a new nagra version in ireland now? (chorus or something)

i think the nagra change will only affect cable stealing chaps who have a basic box i think the more advanced versions can handle the change.
no idea until its out and we see people moaning

Well that’s good news!!! It’s good to hear that Virgin will invest in good encryption and hopefully they will roll it out quickly to discourage people from buying those stupid boxes.

I hope at least some people consider getting Virgin media installed once their boxes go kaput!
