TV Boy Exclusive: I have been told this week (April 24 - May 1) that Virgin will cut the number of TV channels that they carry on their network over the coming year not add.
|
Are they serious!? They should be adding not removing channels. Will it ever sink in to Virgin that people still do want linear TV channels not just VOD.
Well if this is true Virgin have just killed of their TV service: no more linear HD channels as people 'don't want them' and now the removal of channels.
It wouldn't suprise me if in a few years Virgin, if it's still around, will have a TV service, the competition from Sky, Freeview and soon to be launched Freesat is just crushing it. It could be a great service but with an attitude like this it's bye bye Virgin TV.

Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.
Here is the right info:
1. Virgin are going to remove the channels with next to no viewers or they ask to much to carry them on Virgin when their deal is up.
2. Virgin will add new channels but all the time like Sky.
3. Virgin will also cut back on adding any more room to their TV and Internet.

Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.
lets wait and see what if any channels VM remove. I can't see them getting rid of UK Gold or Sky Sports so if it's only something with low or no viewers then it won't be a great loss.
In some way i'd rather have 20 channels I could watch all the time than 100 where there was nothing on at all

Actually, I don't really understand TV Boy's post because when analogue is switched off (by next year we are told) there will be more bandwidth. Actually, people are prepared to pay to receive more channels and so it would be ridiculous and short sighted not to use that spare capacity.
Your statement, cable-guy, I do agree with, but in relation to the first part of the point that was made, which was 'Virgin are going to remove the channels with next to no viewers', this should not be causing too much concern. If next to no-one watches a channel it is rather pointless having it on the system when there are more popular channels that can be added. However, in relation to the last part of the comment 'or if they ask too much to carry them on Virgin', that is rather more concerning. Is there a cut off limit in terms of the charge that a channel will require or do they mean that they are asking too much in relation to the number of viewers that they receive? After all, I would expect a channel like More 4 to be charging more than Diva TV but it would be unthinkable to take off More 4!
I think there must be more behind TV Boy's comment than meets the eye. When VM say that they will 'cut back on adding any more room to their TV...'
maybe they are saying that with analogue disappearing, they have no further need to add more bandwidth to the system. More information on what they actually mean would be very useful.
I am loathe to criticise VM too much because they may have some good plans that we will appreciate with time, but in the meantime, the news snippets that are coming out are rather depressing and encouraging VM viewers over to Sky.
I think there is an urgent need for VM to dispel some of the false rumours that have been spreading and give us some authoritative news on what they are planning. It doesn't necessarily have to be too specific if there are commercial reasons for keeping it secret but I am sure they could find a way of giving us sufficient information to allay our worst fears.

Careful there, TV Boy! That's another positive that you've turned into a negative! We need to take care with our posts because a small mistake can give a totally wrong impression and lead to a lot of despondency on these forums.
Haven't you got any more previously negative news that you can turn into positives, just like that?

Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.
Some good for Racing fans:
US Racing is to be added to the Racing UK lineup from the 1st of May. This is due to Setanta and Racing UK removing Racing World from the Sky Channel lineup.
