Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.

OK, I don't want to be flamed for this but if you feel the need to boost your post count then do so!!

Are we, VM customers, going to get any proper HD Channels anytime soon? I know there is some really good stuff on demand in HD and also some pap! But we want channels - well I do!!

Thanks in advance.

Like what? lol

I cant name any HD channels that arent owned by Sky, and at the moment, they dont want to share, so it isnt gonna happen.

Basically, once they decide they DO want to share, then there is the technical aspect of it. Can VM carry them, bandwidth etc etc.

Once again, the HD bandwagon is sounding its drum, but the fact is, there is a Salad of HD Channels and Content in this Country, compared to, the Tasty 12 Piece Chicken Bucket with added Fries, Coke and Ice Cream that Time Warner has in the USA.

Everyone went out and bought their HD equipment, all excited about the possibilities, but I dont see anything in the way of content for EVERY viewer of TV.

Theres only stuff, mainly for people who like Sport and Movies.

Im sure glad I didnt pay over the top for something like that, especially given they are, like -60% off the price they were, now!

BBC HD (Which we have)
Channel 4 HD (We will get that, I am sure)

Sky One HD
Sky Sports HD
Sky Movies HD
Sky Arts HD

National Geographic HD
History Channel HD (Whats the point? lol. Most of its Black and White!)
Discovery HD (Well, thats a decent one.)

Whereas Time Warner has:

http://www.timewarnercable.com/MidOh...ucts/hdtv.html

Im not listing them all.

Its still a baby, in this country. We wont see something near to that number for a good few years yet, and if Sky keep nabbing everything, itll go straight to them.

---------- Post added at 18:08 ---------- Previous post was at 17:59 ----------

edit: on the technical side of things, a bit more detail is here:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitalt...-new-york.html

Basically, this COULD be implemented in this country, but its up to the Cable Co. and whether there will be any more HD Channels in the future.

100 HD Channels in New york, though... phew!

---------- Post added at 18:08 ---------- Previous post was at 18:08 ----------

Grabbi isn't there some sort of competition rule involved with HD channels?, surly Sky cant be allowed to corner the market.

There's nothing to stop VM doing separate deals with TV channels - the Sky route is not the only option!

If there is a problem with HD channels coming to VM because of bandwidth (if indeed that is a problem) then it would be a face-saving initiative that would keep HD enthusiasts happier if we could get more HD programmes and films on VOD. Personally, I would be pretty happy with that, as long as we could have Channel 4HD and ITV HD later this year (and Five HD if this materialises).

And now for me to say thanks to the following regular contributors of this thread who give me some of my Information.
They are:- harmitage, grabbi, JG3870, Jasmeet, buba3d, sakiblateef and Bob.

Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.

The five main channels and S4c will have HD from 2009.

It will be transmitted via freeview by region by region as they go digital. So North west will get it first as the are digital already.

I would think these channels would be available to cable and sky. To complement the beeb HD.

Although this is really freeview news it is to show these channels available soon.

However those with freeview boxes dont go jumping up and down. It wont work on standard freeview boxes even your built in ones in your HD ready tv's as I understand as the multiplexes are to be moved and it will need a DVB-T2 reciever to get HD anyway.

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/images/nr/multiplexes

http://www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?id=2962

However VM wont get new HD until they solve there own bandwidth issues.

Hopefully they will get it sorted soon VM dont want to find themselves behind freeview in HD.

HD Channels on Virgin Media are like this (As far as I know)

Channel 4 HD - Virgin have got the rights to carry this channel but they need the room to carry it and they are working on it.

ITV1 HD & Five HD - Virgin are rumoured to be in talks with both broadcasters over they HD Channels coming.

S4C HD - No news on this one but if it do come it maybe going to be broadcast in Wales only.

thanks TV Boy for this info does this mean bandwidth issues close to resolved. I would assume with bbc Iplayer launch we getting the archive section once the trials concluded.

I really interested in able to watch things right upto 50's.

Incidently just seen ITV advertising similar prog like Iplayer for the net. I hope this comes to VM too.
