Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.
Breaking news: Good news for Rock fans.
Planet Rock is save for now and will continue broadcasting until the end of April.
The station was due to shut down on March 28th along with theJazz from digital platforms including Digital One and Virgin Media.
The news of the extension comes from Rick Wakeman during his Saturday morning programme on March 22nd. "Planet Rock will continue for another month to allow time for discussions to take place with a potential buyer," he said.
GCap's plans to sell their stake in national digital multiplex Digital One along with Xfm stations outside of London are also thought to be put on hold whilst negotiations continue with Global Radio. It is hoped Global Radio will abandon plans to ditch digital should they be successful in buying GCap Media.
So far, it is thought theJazz will close as planned on Friday, 28th March.

DMAX 2 update:
DMAX 2 will not be on Virgin when it starts on the 7th of April but we will not miss anything as DMAX 2 is just an +2 Hours channel of DMAX.

Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.
I have found the following on the ofcom web site:
Quote:
|
1.3 The national DAB service provided by The Jazz (operated by GCap Media) is due to close on 31 March 2008. This service had proved popular attracting 364,000 listeners a week. Upon the closure of the Jazz, Classic FM (also owned by GCap Media) has stated that it will provide jazz programming between midnight and 2am each day, although it has no obligation to do so in its licence and could drop this at any time. No other jazz programming is available on commercial radio either on FM or DAB in the UK.

Here is the full story: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/cond...ormat/summary/
Info from Ofcom.

Re: Coming soon to Virgin Media 2008.
It's interesting to read of all the new channels that may arrive on VM this year. Does this mean that rumours of bandwidth shortages and the like are all wrong or are VM doing something about these problems?
Does anyone know?
It would be particularly good to get ITV HD, Channel 4 HD and Five HD this year and others would be nice too!

Excellent info once again TV Boy, but could you tell me what you mean when you refer to "linear" channels. I have heard other people use this expression before, can you enlighten me please?

He means the broadcast channels such as BBC1, Virgin 1, etc, as opposed to the channels on video on demand.

I'm currently deciding between V+ and Sky HD so I'm particularly interested in HD channels. I see people talking about C4 HD coming "soon", but soon can be very open ended. What kind of time frame have C4 and Virgin given? Are we talking a few weeks? A few months? A few years?
They really need to sort themselves out with linear HD. Looking at the Sky HD line-up Virgin's paltry one HD channel does look rather feeble, but then Sky's installation charge is rather comical, and the thought of helping to fund the Murdoch machine is enough to put me offf.

VM are keeping very tight lipped about it, which either indicates that they are embarrassed about the poor offering or are going to bring us a big surprise at some point in the future!
My personal view is that we will get all the terrestrials in HD and there will be more HD choice on VOD. This would give people real choice between paid for linear HD channels with Sky or HD programming free of charge with VM (apart from films).
Personally, I hope for more, but I'm not that optimistic. I hope that someone with some good inside knowledge can offer us some reassurance on this forum.
