Who knows, and if they do, won't they be hammered by the same anti competition rules as Sky?
I have no doubt that, if they have any cash, they would much sooner pursue some hare brained, publicity grabbing scheme to throw it at rather than investing it in their under performing network where it is really needed.

Re: will vm try and buy itv again

If Sky weren't allowed to hang on to their shares in ITV due to it being anti-competetive why should Virgin Media fare any better. They after all also run a number of TV channels too.

Virgi doesnt have that stranglehold on the PAY TV industry, and Virgin doesnt influence the News broadcasts and political views.

Can you give some examples on the last two objections there please?

Re: will vm try and buy itv again

The government's agents are the ones suggesting that Sky shouldn't have a stake in ITV, which kind of undermines that argument I would have thought, no?

And the poster did specifically mention influencing news broadcasts not printing. If we follow the logical discussion, then should the BBC be allowed to own BBC One & Two?

Also, ITV own a 40% stake in ITN, should this be allowed?

The competition commission doesn't work like that. You can establish dominance by building yourself a new TV channel, or supermarket, or whatever, but you can't do it by buying up somebody else's. That's what stopped Asda, Tesco or Sainsburys from buying Safeway - all of them were too big already.

However note that Morrison was allowed to buy Safeway, because (with one or two local exceptions) the transaction would not lead to him dominating the market. Similarly, just because it is ruled that Sky has undue influence in the market thanks to its shareholding in ITV, it does not follow that the same would be true of VM.

IMO, VM's broadcast operation, being of a far more modest scale than Sky's, would be unlikely to worry the commissioner. I think VM would certainly get away with it if they tried, the question now is whether the moment has passed. Lots of factors influence major corporate deals like this and the whole 'sub prime mortgage' scandal has had many knock-on effects in the UK, including availability and cost of capital.

Re: will vm try and buy itv again

I wasn't really trying to ressurect the discussion of whether Virgin would be allowed to buy the stake on offer of ITV, it was just questioning the rationale of the argument that Grabbi was putting forward, which IMO was somewhat flawed.

As it happens, I pretty much agree that Virgin wouldn't have the problems that Sky have had and continue to have now in buying into mainstream media in the UK - but not for the reasons in post #4!

Re: will vm try and buy itv again

According to Digital Spy (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcas...itv-stake.html) Virgin are calling for a reduced Sky stake in ITV - down to 3%. Would Virgin want ITV if Sky are a share holder?

I can't see why not - 3% doesn't buy you too much influence.

Seeing as we're being particular about the proposed structure of a VM/ITV deal, do you have any details about it, or a link?
