Re: Setanta picture

Setanta like other broadcasters, can only broadcast in the format supplied, so if they receive a picture feed in 4:3 format, (Black lines down the side of the picture) and not in widescreen they can only broadcast it that way. I too thought the Frennch football at the weekend looked a bit daft but It seems the French have not figured out that the rest of the world have widescreen.

Yes but the problem with Setanta is that when watching in 4:3 they letterbox the picture even if it's a non widescreen broadcast.
Only widescreen pictures should be letterboxed, 4:3 should be full screen.

Re: Setanta picture

Exactly, surely the letterbox window has the same 4:3 ratio as the full screen picture?

So why can't they enlarge the picture to fill the screen and keep the 4:3 ratio?

Re: Setanta picture

Your widescreen TV is 16-9 ratio, if they put 4-3 on to fill the screen all images would look distorted and people short and fat.

I don't have a widescreen TV. 4:3 is my default setting.

There is quite a thread on this at..

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11...-channels.html

Check out the later pages of that thread. Upshot is that Setanta know of this aspect ratio issue on VM and are "working to resolve it". FWIW, VM say it will be resolved by August 31st !

Re: Setanta picture

TCM is another channel with some odd aspect ratios - they insist on putting everything 4:3, with a widecsreen film letterboxed and the logo in the free space - on some wide TV's, this can be countered by manually selecting the option that fills width and clips top and bottom.

Hi,

I wrote the 31st August to be fixed but that was an estimate by VM customer support (so I don't really have complete faith in that date)

The problem i have it was fine in the month of the Ricky Hatton fight but soon as Sentanta came on the XL package for VM customers somebody pressed the crazy aspect ratio button, the one that says do not press. Sentanta it carn't be that hard to fix
