Re: Setanta picture

Not crazy at all. Setanta always broadcast widescreen on 1, 2 and Golf. If they receive 4:3 video (e.g. your ManU game), they make it fit in the 16:9 frame by adding black bars down the sides, as in the first picture here. You have a widescreen TV, so you see the bars.

If you set your STB to 4:3 mode, the TV will stretch the 4:3 picture to 16:9, but then the aspect ratio will be wrong. That's because you told the STB you have a 4:3 TV.

The NRL game will have been a widescreen source, so they didn't need to add the bars.

Thank's for the explanation, but why in the 21 century are we still broadcasting in 4:3 it is getting difficult to buy these traditional tv anymore as there is no demand for them

Re: Setanta picture

Didn't ITV have this problem too when showing Champions League matches last season?

Their studio pictures and pitchside reports were proper widescreen but the actual match had black borders left/right if I recall.

Question Re: Setanta picture

Quick question though what frame size is SKY Sports broadcasting then, in 4:3 mode on my stb they are stretched horizontally to fit the screen, but in 16:9 mode they are stretched vertically with no black bars showing either side which makes it confusing?

Sky switch the broadcast to suit whatever format the content is, so they don't usually need to add black areas. Regardless, you should never get stretched pictures if the STB is set correctly for your TV shape. So I suspect you are not using the correct mode on your TV. Most TVs should be in 'Widescreen' mode, but it does vary depending on the make/model.

Re: Setanta picture

Setanta seem to have changed this again to fit the frame depending on your screen. I had the 'picture frame' problem (mentioned on DS) and it made things unwatchable. I noticed though the other day that when watching, they had changed it to fit the 4:3 frame again.
I still watch on a 4:3 CRT and, probably due to the small size of my property, prefer to watch that way. I do letterbox some of the stuff though.

Re: Setanta picture

It looked fine to me too. But then again I was watching it on a 14" CRT so maybe that helps.

Watching the replay coverage of the Bayern game at the moment and that looks a bit ropey, but at least it's filling the whole screen.

Re: Setanta picture

I was watching on 14" CRT too and it was a bad picture! It was even worse on the V+ downstairs while looking at the program that started before the Boxing, very bad compression evident.

It's same on Sky Sports Xtra for the Sevilla match, the pitch is blurry and the picture looks over compressed.

Seems like VM are back to normal then

My picture was poor on Setanta Sports 1 during that game, I do know that I may have some signal problems, to busy ATM to get an engineer out but it is also causing problems on the basic Samsung box as well as the V+ box.
