Watching all channels through HDMI

Can you do this? I know there arent many HD channels but can you watch all the channels through the hdmi? if so, does the picture look better?
I also got told V+ will be getting Channel 4 in HD soon. Also the battle between sky and Virgin has moved from the courts, Its gone further now

Re: Watching all channels through HDMI

The picture won't look better as it will still be at the standard resolution, only HD output will look any different.

But you can still watch all channels using the HDMI cable?

Re: Watching all channels through HDMI

Yep, it's what it is there for. All it means (as far as I know) is that all channels are output through the cable and when a HD signal is present you get the full benefit of it.

The V+ actually upscales the standard resolution picture to the resolution you choose (720 or 1080). On my Panasonic LCD, the upscaled picture looks better than the picture on Freeview. Agreed that the upscaling can't add detail that is not there but the picture is sharper and the colours more 'vibrant'.

I second that. I have noticed distinct improvement in SD quality between scart input and HDMI.

HDMI is an uncompressed digital connection as far as I know so should be less prone to noise than the analogue scart would be.
It may well be that some manufacturers are adding some blocking filters which are able to smooth out some of the mpeg2 artifacts on the HDMI connections.

Sorry to sound thick but could you put that in terms that a technically challenged but interested person like me can understand. Have I been kidding myself about the improvement?

Jo

I can't see that the HDMI connection would be dramatically better than an RGB scart connection. It would be noticably better than a simple Composite Scart connection.
It may be the TV's signal processing is better via the HDMI.

The way I see it (no pun intended), if it looks better to you then who cares?

An uncompressed digital signal means no detail at all is lost.

afaik the new V+ box does try to 'upscale' SD content, similar to the upscaling DVD players - no way I could attempt to try & explain what I've read, especially to you - but does deinterlace & rescale make any sense, Creative???

Its still de-interlacing (i to p conversion means repeating fields like a 100Hz screen does) an interlaced source (theres no progressive broadcasts atm). Upscaling means taking a 720x576 interlaces source image and repeating certain pixels to stretch the image to a 1280x720 (on the lower resolution HD displays) or 1920x1080 (the best HD screen size).
HDMI shouldn't have that much of a difference with SD pics, in my opinion. However as I said, if you like it then thats what counts.

Thanks for trying to explain Creative. I don't think my brain is wired for technology, my eyes seem to cross and I couldn't focus as soon as I tried to read your latest post and those of homealone.
