When do you think HD services will become the standard?
With everyone and their dog getting HD TVs, when do you think companies such as VM and Sky will start offering their HD services without having to pay a premium for them?
There are so many options available to pay TV, but will HD ever become the standard?
Of course, it relies on there being sufficient HD content, but any TV company must surely be increasing their HD programme ratio by now.
Will 'HD for Free' ever become a marketing ploy in the near future?

HD has been in the States for a number of years but its by no means to norm. Just look at how long its taking to phase out analogue.

Weeeellllll, not really because you need to pay the extra for the V+ box, hence not free as a standard service.
I suppose what I'm asking is when will VM and Sky only supply HD capable boxes for the price of their SD boxes?

Re: When do you think HD services will become the standard?
Who says 'everyone' will buying HDTV's?
I'm not at all impressed by the HDTV's i've seen on sale in stores, some look washed out, some have blocky pictures, some have bad black distribution so you see 'blocks of colour' rather than even shades, some have lip synch issues and these were Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba brands.
No, I'm waiting until SD is no longer available and HD is the norm so I'm not forking out for technology that might become obsolete in a few years, like the HDMI 1.1 being obsolete in favour of HDMI 1.3.

Totally agree, HD seems to be a backward step at the moment. However you try going in to a shop like John Lewis and buy a CRT! Seems like the shops are forcing HD on people when its not really ready

Not yet I hope as I can't afford it. Nor do I watch enough to justify the cost at the moment.

I don't know that we ever will get to that stage. There isn't enough bandwidth available.

That's exactly what I think.
A quick tour around your local Comet or Currys though leaves you very little choice but HD for a half decent TV. For that reason, if my current SD 32" w/s TV went up in smoke, I'd hoof it down to somewhere like ASDA where a cheapo CRT replacement could be had.
On the other hand...cheapo HD LCDs do look tempting...

Actually, I saw a 32inch Sony Wega 1080i CRT HD Ready TV for sale in Tottenham Court Road a few months back. It actually had a far superior picture to any LCD or Plasma I have seen.

Exactly the point! 'Older' technology seems to be far superior than the current offerings, CRT screens being better than LCD and the old analogue TV delivering better picture than digital (at least in VM's case!).
The buying public are being brainwashed into thinking anything with 'Digital' in the title means it's 'better'!
