Red face questions, questions, questions :)

Im going to be one of them annoying people now who ask a load of questions. I myself hate reading such threads, but please bear with me on this occasion

Right...

Im going to apply for Virgin Media 3 for £30 With :
Broadband package :M
Phone Package : M
TV : XL
What I want to know is, If i receive the services through cable, is it a hassle getting connected (i.e. digging up drive etc...) also, where does the phone connect to? the same out put as the TV or through a traditional BT phone point? and in either case, can I keep my current BT phone number?? And broadband, are there wireless routers for cable out there, and do virgin media supply any?

Also, is the £30 inclusive of line rental? im invisiging paying £41.50 a month

£30 = basic subscription
£10 = V+ Subscription
£1.50 = TalkMobile
(plus calls outside the weekend plan)

Is this correct? - im aware of the £25 installation charge.

Again, sorry for the longwinded question[s] - but rest assured your help is so muchly appreciated.

Hi wow a lot of questions ill try and answer some
First the will dig the garden .In the street you will have a little square or round point outside your home .This is where they will bring the cable up and bring into the garden.Depending on your garden if its grass they will bury the cable in the garden and bring it to the house.Speak to the installers about the routing in the garden before they start .They will put a box on the outside of the the house from here they will run a telephone cable to where your BT is .They do this incase you have ext running from the bt socket so you can still use these when the bt socket is turned off. Then they will run cables to where the tv is and another to where the pc is .The best thing to do is to get them to walk round the job and get them to explain where and how they will route the cables .Then if you want to keep your BT No VM will take the details when order the service .What will happen is on the day of the install you will be given a temp no until the no port goes ahead then on that day your bt socket will go dead and your no will be on the VM socket. As for wireless routers Wm do not provide these you will have to get your own phwew hope some of this info helps

Re: questions, questions, questions :)

The phone goes into the phone socket, they should just take over the BT phone point or put a new one in and you have to request to keep your bt number when ordering. wireless routers you can get from most shops and i think they are cheaper than asdl ones because they dont have a modem in them also the 30 pound includes line rental. but note after 12 months you will no longer get the XL TV Pack and will get the L TV Pack instead meaning it will cost you £15 a month for the V+ service from then on

Oh and you can buy wireless routers from the Virgin Media site

Re: questions, questions, questions :)

Thanks for the replies. Having loacted the cable cover outside my property, its occurred to me that its going to be tricky getting cable into the house. because we have a paved driveway and wall. Would this be an issue? Also, once inside the house, you mentioned that they connect the cable to the Main BT Phone socket. This is in a really awkward place. Will they need to lay cable down along the skirting boards in order to connect? and i have no phone point near the TV, so presumably they will need to put yet more wires through the house along skirting boards?

I thought they'd just put a cable in through the wall behind your TV and bobs your uncle. Obviously i was wrong

Re: questions, questions, questions :)

Danny

The cable is normally buried in the garden to reach a junction box on the house exterior and then tacked on to the brickwork.
In your case I guess they can tack the cable to the wall to reach the junction box.

Your BT socket is owned by BT and Virgin Media will not use it, they will install a VM master socket wherever you want it (within reason).
As NedKelly pointed out, if you have extension sockets running off the BT master, these will need to be connected to the VM master and this is easiest to do if both master sockets are close together.
If you decide to locate the VM master socket elsewhere, you will need to extend or replace any extension socket wiring.

The TV feed uses a second (coax) cable from the junction box outside and can be passed into the house behind the TV.

Hope this helps

I don't know if this is the case now as our cable was installed many moons ago by C&W, but our cable run came in through the front garden and grey box situated on the front wall, however our BT socket was at the rear of the house but the installers ran the cable outside the house and brought it in through the rear wall so there was no need for cable runs along skirting boards.

Hope this helps

Re: questions, questions, questions :)

Thanks

All these replies are really helpful and really appreciated.

B4its2L8? - I think we're in the same position as you. The main master BT socket used to be under the stairs (have no idea why) but when we had an extension out back, Its now in an upstairs bedroom. Will it not work if its connected to an extended cabled one?
