Re: v+box - hdmi = no teletext?

The standard digital cable TV platform didn't carry the analogue teletext signals, so I wouldn't expect the V+ to offer that either

Yes it does, check out Paramount Comedy for an example!

Teletext isn't carried on HDMI because it's outside the HDMI spec. If you really want to see a WST teletext stream, you'll have to use one of the non-HD outputs.

Yes, but obviously the picture wouldn't be upscaled to HD.

That's not true. Ex-NTL carry teletext on many digital channels -- unfortunately though not on the one you're most likely to want, the BBC. The reason for that is that NTL take their digital feed from digital terrestrial, which doesn't have teletext signals.

However, former Telewest areas *DO* have access to Ceefax via digital channels. I don't know how they do it from a technical point of view, but it's something I'd love to see in ex-NTL areas too. BBCi is a reasonable replacement for Ceefax on DTT, where you can enjoy 1-second load times, but it's far too slow on cable.

By the way, given that Sky don't support DVB standard subtitles and rely on teletext p888 instead, does anybody know how this works with an HDMI-connected Sky Plus HD box?

Re: v+box - hdmi = no teletext?

The Sky and Sky+ boxes can display VBI (p888) subtitles on-screen in software, without relying on the TV. I'd assume the Sky HD box can do the same.

Re: v+box - hdmi = no teletext?

My wife reads pages and pages of news on teletext every morning. We are on Telewest digital cable at the moment, but will have the V+ box fitted in a few weeks time. It's already ordered. Anyway i hope something can be done about being able to use teletext in high definition.
