Re: Will Virgin Buy Setana Sports

I doubt people with Sky Sports will miss Setanta anyway, I mean what do you get on Setana apart from Golf and Serie A?

Edit:

Setanta covers...

Setanta Sports 1
Setanta Sports 2
Setanta Ireland
Setanta Golf
NASN now owned by ESPN
Setanta Pay Per View 1
Setanta Pay Per View 2
Celtic TV
Rangers TV

Nah, wouldn't miss them at all

Re: Will Virgin Buy Setana Sports

Would be an excellent acquisition, but you have to look at the net worth of the company.

Setanta is huge in Ireland, and has Rangers and Celtic TV, plus Serie A (something I believe still has a place on British TV) and Premiership games.

Maybe Virgin could make it Free to XL + Sports package subscribers, and PPV/Encripted on Sky?

Or will OFCOM say that it will have to be the same on all platforms?

Either way, they would still only be available to people who pay for Sports and XL, and it can stay PPV on Sky.

Can't see it happening though...

---------- Post added at 16:59 ---------- Previous post was at 16:51 ----------

Apparently Setanta is Free in Ireland, on Virgins Basic Package.

Virgin doesn't carry PPV1 and 2 but carries everything else, Including NASN, now ownd by ESPN.

For this take over to work, the whole company would have to be bought, or a significat amount of shares would have to be bought... much like the BSkyB/ITV stake.

The Company is the Setanta Sports Group, and they own all channels, broadcast in UK, Ireland and abroad, including America.

Its a massive company, and it would be very expensive to take over.

A buy out of shares is possible, but a deal with Setanta and Virgin seems more visable.

Eitherway, for Virgin customers to get over the loss of Sky Sports News and other channels, they should reduce the costs of Setanta, or, as I said before, add it to the Sports Pack?

Aussie NRL matches, and more of them than sky used to show, a bit miffed that setanta has got them now.

ESPN dont own NASN yet

The way forward would be to stop the transmission companies (sky, Virgin media) from owning the channels, in the same way as Transco own the gas piple line but dont supply gas, same as the railways and electricity

why, Virgin Media pay sky for sky channels and Setanta for their channels, why should they drop the price of one package to compensate for another companies packages

I don't think it's likely to happen.

I think what's more likely is a deal to include Setanta in a pack alongside Sky Sports. Come next season, when Setanta have some Premiership rights, Virgin could then advertise a pack containing all Premiership games at an attractive price.

Yes, I remember PremPlus at £1 per month when NTL (as it was then) last had some Premiership rights - how much is it now Sky have them?
