New Box, New EPG

Today i had my old pace box replaced (at last) by a shiny new samsung, and it automatically downloaded the new virgin firmware no forced update or anything, so perhaps this is a sign for it to come to all automatically. Im in the nottingham area . The new EPG is alot faster aswell, i like it.
[EDIT] No ive got my old ntl smartcard, but he did say something bout ordereing new smartcard.
Nope its justa silver samsung
Im ex ntl langley.

Re: New Box, New EPG

3 questions

1. Is the smartcard Virgin Media?
2. Is the Box branded the new Virgin Media V box?
3. Are u ex ntl or ex telewest

---------- Post added at 18:46 ---------- Previous post was at 18:04 ----------

So does it not have any branding on the box and can you give some more information on the smartcard ordering a new one??

Nope no new branding at all, they left me my old remote aswell. There is no ntl branding either justa plain box. He said something about needing a new card eventually and there getting sent out im not sure he didnt say much. He did say though that he had ordered me a new one so i dont know. The only thing new is the software.

Re: New Box, New EPG

The thing is with those paces the techs and that know there crap but they still give them out, the one who came to me didnt even bother checking it just replaced it after i told him it froze alot lol. He also said hes only going to give out samsungs from now on, so better for all.
And btw my old box burnt a hole through my smatrcard so it could be that.

That is very true, and im so glad they are no longer giving out Pace boxes.

Also that could be why he need to replace you smartcard, but even so keep me updated on if you get a new Virgin Media one or not.

You need to ask for a HDMI cable when you book the V+ box install and they will provide you with one

Re: New Box, New EPG

Hey,

I have a few quick Q's if that's ok (didn't want to make a new topic!).

Is there any change in the GUI for Virgin Media digital TV? And is there a new STB for customers? I used to have NTL TV in an old uni house and it was so crap! STB crashed a couple of times a week, and the whole layout of the UI was very unintuitive. Worst of all the channel numbers were so random and disorganised! Sky are great; nice responsive UI and ordered channels, 3xx for films 6xx for cartoons etc. etc.

I just have normal freeview atm, but would consider moving back to NTL/VM if the service has been vastly improved. Currently paying £25pm for 4MB internet and £12.xx for a BT line. NTL seem to have a lot of much sweeter deals on at the moment!

Cheers,

Suman

Hi I cant answer your first question as im still on the old software version.
The current V box (STB) is a samsung but however there are still a few other ones knocking around for example Pace, these are not made anymore though.

The new user interface from what i have heard is very good and there has been some massive changes since you ditched the T.V.

Virgin Central
VOD in masses
New channels

They do have some great bundles as i'm on one. ( This would meen switching your phoneline to Virgin Media you would be able to keep your old number)

Here is what i got:

V+box

V box upstairs

XL Tv package

M Broadband

XL Phone (free uk landline calls)

For £50.00

Great Deal

Also if you did want to see what the t.v is like now if you have a phoneline with Virgin media you can get free t.v basically freeview with a few extra channels.

Anyway i suggest you ring up the Customer Realations team and say your willing to get free t.v and a phoneline with you on top of your broadband.

They will defo offer you somthing if you ask!!

Hope this helps

John

P.S there is no such company as Ntl anymore We are all now Virgin Media!!!

Edit The number for Customer realations 0800 0730 591 ... lol

Yep, anyone with an old Pace box, just break it, Virgin come and give you a new Samsung box, no questions asked.

Re: New Box, New EPG

Talking about the new EPG - Can anyone with a good technical knowledge answer me this:
1. As I understand it, the cable EPG is slower than Sky (I get the impression that it's a little clunky) - is this true?
2. If it is true, why can't cable introduce new and improved software? Can the platform handle it? I'd expect it could if it can manage VOD so well.
3. Why are the interactive services not as good as they should be? News multi screen etc.

I am receiving a new V+Box as part of the VIP package next month & have just bought a Toshiba 37WLT66 TV (it's brill) £719.99 Empire Direct, so i'm all ready & can't wait to get it connected to the V+ box.

So, is the HDMI cable free or is there a cost........if so how much?
It was not mentioned when i ordered the package.
