Re: Virgin Media News

BSkyB bullish about NTL threat

I found this on The Guardian web site from Wednesday January 31, 2007.

The BSkyB chief executive, James Murdoch, shrugged off the threat posed by the rebrand of rival NTL as Virgin Media, saying the satellite broadcaster offers better quality and better prices than cable can muster.

Virgin Media will launch - presumably accompanied by one of Sir Richard Branson's trademark stunts - next Thursday.

Speaking after Sky announced a mixed set of half-year results, James Murdoch said:

Quote:
"I think there will be a huge amount of noise ... but basically customers are pretty smart and when you look at what we are doing in the market place today ... you can get [from us] a dramatically better quality TV, broadband and telephony experience than you can from Virgin."
"We are very confident that the product we have is of better quality, in terms of TV and broadband and telephony,"
he added, stressing that Sky is also currently the only high definition TV broadcaster in the UK.

The BSkyB chief financial officer, Jeremy Darroch, was rather more blunt:
Quote:
"The bottom line is we don't think a name change affects the fundamental issues they [Virgin Media] still have around product development, customer service and pricing flexibility and we think customers will see that."

Re: Virgin Media News

Did you know:

Sky USED to own 50% of Eurosport in 1989 Before Sky & BSB becomes BSkyB in 1991 then they sold their 50% back to Eurosport then Screensport BUYS them then Renames back to Eurosport.

Sounds like SKY stuck up in its own ego. They are really in for a shock to the system. I still maintain in 10 years SKY will be down to possible 3-4 million customers who are hardcore satalite enthusiasts. Maybe murdock knows this hence trying to mussle into getting sky through an aerial. satellite technology has too many flaws and will be needing upgrades at staggering costs. God knows how old astra system is and the costs to put a new one up. I really believe SKY realising issues with there technology and looking at ways to move from Satelite. Maybe in a quirky twist in the future SKY will want to hire cable bandwidth from virgin media to pipe to its customers. Just end up being a production company.

Re: Virgin Media News

The following Information is from Jasmeet
Eurosport News - probably for ch526.

It's a sports news channel from Eurosport that had previously been on cable but was replaced by Eurosport 2 (It still appears at night similar to how News 24 appears on BBC 1), presumably it's been added again as a replacement for Sky Sports News.

Thanks for the Information.
