Samsung Boxes
Quick question, ive posted this here before but i think i have some more info.
I read a while ago that there is some kind of national fault with ntl and them communicating with Samsung Boxes, did page up page down and blue and i have a lot of CAK - Callback unsuccessful. Now, when i need to reboot my stb (when it freezes/ there is a powercut) it sits there for anything up to 15 minutes with the flashing red light on the power button, the stb downstairs does this but for a couple of seconds, before it does the samsung bootup. Just wondering if the errors that i have on my set top box may be causing it to take an extended time to reboot? Because, a week or so ago we had a powercut and STB rebooted in a lot shorter time, and CAK - Callback was Successful so the event log said.
Also dont seem to have any red button content on that box, VOD, is working... was just a query really!

Re: Samsung Boxes
I have a Samsung STB - no issues in Leeds since I can remember.

Re: Samsung Boxes
Well I've got a Samsung - and I do know what you mean. The first time I tried to reboot, it sat there for a fair while with the red light on the button just flashing repeatedly - at about 5 second intervals. (This was a hard reboot - power off, then power on).
I didn't know what was going on, and tried pushing everything in sight, to no avail. Then I stopped messing with it and left it while I had a think about what else I could try - and when left alone for a little while it sorted itself out and rebooted successfully.
Since then, if I wanted to reboot, I use the 3 buttons on the front to restart - think that's OK + left + right isn't it?? - anyway, I try to avoid pulling the power lead out of the back). No problems found with that type of reboot.

Re: Samsung Boxes
I have found that after long periods on standby the box won't turn on using the remote. For instance when I get back from work I will have to actually push the button on the front to turn the box on.
Even then the control is very unresponsive for some time.

Re: Samsung Boxes
I have a Samsung. I leave it on all the time.
Often, on first turning on the TV, the STB is absolutely unresponsive to the remote for periods of 2 or 3 minutes.
Just another example of the general "clunkiness" Ntl DTV I suppose.

An example of a LCD TV, I'd have thought. They send out infrared interference, particularly when cold. Try adjusting the TV's backlight, or moving the STB so it can't see the TV.

If that was the case then I would presume the issue would occur every time. In fact it happens randomly and not only when the TV is first switched on. I seem to remember it happening with a CRT TV but it's been a while so can't be sure.
My TV is a Panasonic Viera. There is no setting to adjust the backlight. Would the setting be called something else? I have Brightness, Contrast, Colour Temp and noise IIRC.
It's not a big deal, just one of many minor annoyances. I do appreciate the help and suggestions though.

I had this problem - change the batteries in the remote - they don't like it when your infra-red signal is weak

It's worth a try I suppose . I have some at home somewhere. I have to admit I haven't changed them since I got the box last year - and by the looks of it the ones supplied are only El Cheapos any way.
