Are 00 800 numbers free on NTL?
Can anyone please tell me if 00 800 numbers are actually free international calls - as the number suggests?

No they aren't free, charged as standard international calls. There is no such thing as a free international call barring possibly VoIP.

Erm, yes there is, these are free on BT.
UIFN Numbers - Universal International Freephone Numbers
The Spring 98 edition of a booklet published by the Atlantic Coast of Canada Tourist Bureau stated that they can be contacted by phone toll-free from the UK by dialling 00800-549-37711. This number connects from the UK to their Information Centre in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The number is certainly toll-free when dialled from a callbox. When the number is dialled from a BT "Phone Card" callbox in the UK the display indicates the fact that the call is free of charge and no payment is deducted from a phone card. When the number is dialled from a BT "Coins and Credit Card" callbox in the UK there is no need to insert any coins or cards at any time in order to reach the number. I cannot be absolutely certain that the number is toll-free when dialled from a normal domestic UK telephone rather than a callbox but this seems highly likely.
From someones web site...

I stand corrected on international freephone, however I've NEVER phoned a North American freephone number and had it inform me of anything bar that I will be paying for the call.
Not convinced by a 1998 thing from someone's webspace either dude more current info please

North American freefone numbers (which you'd get by dialling 00 1 800 xxx xxxx from the UK) aren't free, as you say. UIFNs (Universal International Freefone Numbers - which you'd get by dialling 00 800 xxxx xxxx from most countries) are.

Jimbo has found a very good link on the info. I'd have thought he would have known about the pricing too though.
I have used the one for Starwood Hotels, it's the only one I know. I know they are usually not available from mobiles as they would charge / have problems when roaming.

Re: Are 00 800 numbers free on NTL?
It's an Orange thing - they seem to be the only mobile phone company who don't charge their users for 0800/0500/00800 calls!
