Those damm cold calls
I have been told that it is possible to have any phone calls where the number is being witheld, bared from my phone. This would stop all those anoying calls from double glazing companies, free holidays (oh yeh there free) and all those people wanting to give me a free 'latest up to date' mobile phone. Is this true, and does anyone know how I should go about it please.

I belive its possible to do for withheld numbers, thing is these companys don't withhold AFAIK, it only comes up as being unable to transmit the number. somebody better able will no doubt put me right again
Not a help but .............
Do as my friend did, he played along and got then company guy to call at this house, when he got there my friend basically said, how did you get my number and have you enjoyed the waste of a trip as much as i enjoyed the wasted phone call, the guy was speechless ...... good

best thing is to say "hang on, I'll go and get him/her" and leave the guy on hold indefinately - there was a time when apprentices would be sent to the stores for a 'long stand' - anybody remember that?

Re: Those damm cold calls
Make a tape recording along the lines of "your call is important to us, please continue to hold and we will be with you shortly" with a few seconds of naff music before repeating over and over. When you answer the call just make some excuse to leave the phone and start the recording playing.

Must try that when I get a video camera as I like to share the results of such things. Think I'll stick to soundboards for now - to hear my calls click on the link in my sig

Have just phoned NTL and they confirm the number you have given is to set it up, but it may be handy to know the following;
to turn off again #227#
to check if its working *227#
NOTE if you were with NTL before 2002 you will need to phone customer service so they can set this facility up onto your line, or you will get a recorded message saying its not available. All ntl phones connected after 2002 are automatically configured so that you can set it up from your handset using the numbers above.
Lets hope we have got a result, and I hope some of you who have been annoyed by these calls (like me) get some peace now. CHEERS again.

Re: Those damm cold calls
I had a junk call from an Indian call centre last week (on that particular day, I'd had about 8 calls like this and I was fed up).
The man asked: "Could I speak to Mrs ********?" I said that he must have the wrong number as I was Mrs Poppins, Mrs Mary Poppins.
There was a 3 second gap, then the man said: "I'm sorry to have troubled you, Mrs Poppins, have a good evening."
I had to hang up before I burst out laughing!
