Retaining dial-up service

If I switch back from NTL to BT, would I have to surrender my ntlworld account? (ie lose my present e-mail address and web space?)

Yes you need an NTL account to access it.

Re: Retaining dial-up service

Erm, yes - why would they provide you something for no money.

Is this email and web space on a dial up account? If so then you can still dial up to it over a BT line.

Only the PAYG dial-up; the unlimited 0800 number will not work on a BT line.

Re: Retaining dial-up service

I would say it's the monthly subscription that pays for the account and access so not free at all.

That's a pain, actually, because I can also access free virgin.net webspace through ntl dial-up.

So as long as you continue to pay that subscription I don't see why you would lose the account.

Re: Retaining dial-up service

The key seems to be whether the 0800 number will work with a BT line. Does anyone know for sure about that?

NTL have a different 0800 number for off-net (BT) customers, unfortunately you also have to subscribe to NTL Freedom to access that.

Re: Retaining dial-up service

Surely if you cancel your subscription, and therefore close the account, they will close the account and therefore you will lose access?

As a thought, it might work the other way round too (NTL run Virgin.net).

You could convert your unlimited NTL dial-up to PAYG to make sure that the account and email stay active (maybe dialing in for a minute once in a while).

You could then open a Virgin.net 24seven account (for £12.49 per month[1]). You may be able to access your NTL email and webspace via this (at a guess - does anybody know for sure?).

[1] Interestingly, Virgin.net have not yet increased to £13.49 per month like NTL:

Dialling the number is one thing, using it is another. The number can still be dialled from a BT line, at least in some areas, but I suspect you would be denied access as the CLI would not be registered and you'd probably have problems browsing even if you could connect.
The number is no secret, it's 0800 519 0100.
