D5100 DECT phone - won't allow dialing out

Can anyone throw any light on this...My NTL D5100 Dect handset suddenly won't allow more than 2 digits to be dialled - on the third, it just "slow bleeps" and hangs up.
It did this once before , and can't remember how I solved it. (think I disconnnected it for a while) but this time that's not worked.

seems to be some weird call bar as it can dial the emergency services (3 digits!)
I also have a D505 hanset registered to the base station, which works fine.

Grateful for any help.

Thanks people
I looked back at what I wrote and sure enough found a call bar in place on the base station options...
How it got there - lord only knows, as I doubt even my 2 year old would have known the default PIN 0000 required to set it.
