Re: Free to air on analogue

NTL are not currently allowed to broadcast BBC3 and BBC4 on analogue as they are defined as "digital only" channels by the government.

In Cardiff the analogue boxes don't push out Wales Ceefax any more now as the system is "satelite based"? ???

But the West signal we get still has Ceefax .......

Re: Free to air on analogue

I'd reckon there is more chance of Sky giving Ntl a huge cash injection to get their network ready for the full red-button interactive service than BBC3/4 appearing on Analogue

I had BBC2W for a few days and no Welsh Ceefax on BBC1 and 2 but it's all changed back now.

It's never going to happen. As others have said, BBC3 and 4 are digital-only as a condition of their licence. If you want them, you will have to wait for one of the three digital platforms to become available in your area. Hang on, one of them is available ... it's called Sky.

Blame the guv not ntl...they are slowly turning of analogue so they can migrate all channels to digi. Seems as though ntl are think ahead this time so they do not leave it till the last second when the guv turn of the analogue signals

Re: Free to air on analogue

I think a distinction has to be made here between terrestrial analogue(i.e. from an aerial) and cable analogue(from a stb)

Yes the Government and OFCOM do intend to turn the terrestrial analogue service of somtime in the next 4-8 years, however surley it is up to cable operators wheather they choose to have an analogue service or not.

On the issue of channels, I can say that the appearance of any extra terrestrial channels just isn't technically possible, there just isn't any space in the TV broadcast band, videos were booted of their traditional home of UHF ch37 to make way for channel 5(and there still aren't many relay carrying the signal).

What is carried on cable analogue is obviously down to licensing regulation as well as bandwidth available.

Some people living in non-cabled areas in rented accomodation may not even be able to get Freeview yet!

Nope, I would have thought it difficult to pick up any output from the Alpha-Centauri Broadcasting Corporation. Four light years is a long way ...

I'll get me coat.

Re: Free to air on analogue

In 2002, NTL put in a request to Ofcom to carry the BBC's digital channels on analogue. I don't think that, in the end, anything came of it.

http://www.culture.gov.uk/cgi-bin/Ms...age_id=9455872

I still think it would be a good idea for them to carry all the Freeview channels in unencrypted analogue on the cable. Then, with a digital STB with a pass-thru and tvlink-style remote control NTL would have an unbeatable home entertainment service.
