Help recording from cable TV
It's been ages since I needed to do this and now I can't get it working!
I have on old VCR with a SCART socket, my ntl digital STT, and a TV with two SCART sockets.
I can get the video to play, but if I try to record it records snow!
I've tried all sorts of combinations of leads but I'm getting nowehere. What am i doing wrong?

Re: Help recording from cable TV
IIRC you need to go
STB > VCR > TV for it to work
Unless the STB has 2 SCARTS in which case
STB > TV
STB > VCR
might work.....

Re: Help recording from cable TV
Hmm does this mean it's impossible? I used to be able to do it years ago using co-ax. Will it be easier to revert to that?

Re: Help recording from cable TV
Hmmm.....
If there's an ariel output on the STB then you should be able to take that to the VCR and then the SCART from the STB would only need to go to the TV.....
Again, maybe....

Re: Help recording from cable TV
OK thanks folks I'll go and try some of this and report back.

Absolutely no luck.
I've even tried removing the scarts altogether and it just won't play ball.
I'm reasonably ok with technical things but this has ALWAYS flummoxed me. It's ridiculous.

Re: Help recording from cable TV
VCR-STB-TV all with SCART should work. Are you selecting 'AV' (possibly called channel 0) on the VCR when recording?
Or have I missed the point?

Re: Help recording from cable TV
Have you check the setting of the STB.
If I remember correctly there is an option in the setting menu

I don't think it has that. It's very old.
It plays back ok though.
I have just managed to get it to record the sound, but instead of a picture it's a black screen with two vertical white lines.

I can't find a setting relating to VCRs, can you recall whereabouts it is?

I have sorted it!
The vertical lines were because a switch at the back was set to 'tuning' rather than 'signal'...I am guessing it's designed to assist when tuning it in.
It now seems to be recording ok since I changed the config of the SCART leads. Thanks everyone.

Re: Help recording from cable TV
Proppin says it sounds like you've got the test signal turned on, on the back of the VCR. The test signal is used when you want to tune your TV into the VCR. If you turns it off it may well work
EDIT: I see you have sorted it - still haven't got used to those lines representing posts that have been post consecutively
