D5100 handsets keep bleeping

Hi,
can anyone help me as this is driving me nuts. I have a d5100 base unit with 3 D505 handsets. All was fine until yesterday when for no reason the handsets would emit a double bleep the make a two tone noise as if they had been reconnected to the base unit. All 3 handsets do this one after the other and if I am am making a phone call at the time I am disconnected.
I have tried registering them with the base unit again but the bleeps continue.......please help before they go through the window

How old are they? Could it be the base unit is failing? Is there a manual hardware reset button on the main base unit to wipe it clean?

The double bleep sound to me suggests that the phones are about to run out of power is it a loud double bleep? This usually means they need recharging. Like Paul asks, how old are they? If they are old the rechargable batteries may be worn. Thanks.

Most of the batteries are new. The set itself is about 2 yrs old.

I have removed all the batteries and unplugged the base unit and left to reset itself for half an hour but no joy.

There is something else you can check - I have these same phones set. There isn't a new message left on the answer machine is there?
The phones tend to bleep when one is left.

There are no messages left or showing on the handset. I have taken the batteries out of all the handsets and tried them one at a time but it still fails.
