NTL & freeview
Hi,
I am an NTL broadband and phone customer. I don't have a cable TV subscription but I do have an NTL digital box, it's made by Pace and it looks to be working fine. As I do not have a smartcard I only get the NO CHANNELS message but I was wondering: is it possible to get the freeview channels through my NTL box? If so how?
Many thanks,
Jessi x x

Re: NTL & freeview
Thanks,
I do get channel 1 to 5 but only if I plug the NTL cable directly into the telly. Shame it's not possible to get the other channels.

The STB box you have is NTL's property, so you should really send it back to them, i can only assume you have aquired this or have it from a previous subscription!
And by the way there is no such thing as freeview channels on NTL or Telewest. You are referring to the analogue channels you are recieving due to the fact that you have the broadband installed. So again you should not be plugging in any cable into the the network in your house as this will cause problems for yourself,(the performance of the cable modem) and others within the NTL network.
Just to reiterate the fact there is no freeview, ntl do NOT provide freeview.

The cable that feeds the NTL TV signal into the costomers house also carries the broadband signal, which is probably the reason why it's still connected.

I am not being dishonest if that is what you are suggesting. The NTL box was left by the engineer who installed broadband and cable phone. I was hoping that I might get some use from it as I cannot afford the £20 or so for NTL tv.
Thanks for your help to the others, I see now that I was mistaken about what the NTL box can do. I think I will buy a freeview digital TV box instead as it seems to be very good value for money.

 to the forum, Jessi
we are a suspicious lot, aren't we
it sounds like you have had your broadband connected via a set top box, rather than a cable modem, which is weird for a number of reasons, at this present time, hence the confusion...
However, the crux is, you can't get any more out of it, tv wise, than you can now without subscribing, so freeview is cheaper in the long run - I couldn't do without sky1, at the moment, myself

They used to before they flogged off :broadcast
And before I confuse anyone, not over their cable tv system; they owned around half of the terrestial masts, so were responsible for broadcasting Freeview (Digital Terrestrial) from them...

Re: NTL & freeview
I was still under the impression NTL still owned Sandy Heath, Zouches Farm et al. The signs are still up!

Re: NTL & freeview
They flogged of that arm (and a couple of legs) to cover massive debts that they ran up buying all these cable franchises. Not too sure if all their sites were included in the deal, you'd need to ask one of the Ntl guys. Escapee may know.

Re: NTL & freeview
all of ntl's broadcast division sites were sold off - all the broadcasting towers and facilities.
the new company is called national transcommunications limited - although their website says ntl:broadcast
so they are still under the ntl branding at the moment
