hi and to the site , splitting the cable is a no-no & against t&c's , cause a problem and you will most likely end up sheeling £'s out to ntl , sorry , enjoy your stay here though

hi heydj!
Paul is quite right that diy splitting of the cable is against NTL terms & conditions - but that doesn't mean it can't be done
- the 'usual' reason is to provide the terrestrial channels to a second tv, while still having the cable channels via the box.
- but note you can't run two boxes off one cable, for two you need two cables, not a splitter...

Re: Splitting my analogue TV cable - new to this!!
I have the main ntl cable coming into my lounge which goes into a TV/DATA isolater which has one output which leads to my cable box. When I want to watch the cable upstairs I have to disconnect the downstairs cable from the output of the isoltor and plug in the upstairs one in. I was hoping there was some sort of connection that i wouldnt have to keep unpluggin/plugging either box in?

You shouldnt have 2 boxes in the first place, without 2 accounts. You are more than likely handling stolen goods, if it was purchased from eBay or another source.

on my setup the splitter comes first, this then feeds a tv/data isolator for the TV decoder with one cable and my cable modem with the other.
I'm still puzzled how you manage to get 2 boxes working on one connection, even if it isn't both at the same time, but disregarding that, to get what you want you would presumably need a switched splitter ex the tv/data isolator. I'm not sure if such a thing exists, to be honest. Hopefully someone else may be able to help more.

Your best bet if the stb's are both on your ntl account then get ntl in to sort the "switching" cable issue out if it was not done correctly in the first place. As other people have quoted in the thread you CAN run more than 1 box of you input cable(tv/fm box) you are right in saying you need a splitter (this is all ntl would do).

Is it not possible to have a Scart lead that goes from both TV's and into a scart adapter box, with the other end of the box going into your STB ?

my Scientific Atlanta doesn't - a normal 'aerial' type connector plugs into the 'telly' (just my telly happens to be a tv card in my pc).

Re: Splitting my analogue TV cable - new to this!!
Of course it is possible to split the analogue signal. I have 3 analogue boxes, entirely independent, and a SACM spliting off a single cable. This, of course, is all done legally by NTL and works without a problem. The boxes have to be activated from the NTL end so I am not sure that just putting in a second box will work, apart from the normal 4/5 terrestryial channels.
