Obviously the service is contended becuase they are not going to provide enough circuits for eveyone in the country to use their phone at the same time , its completely un-neccecery (not to mention the cost involed would be astromonical )

So im guessing the idea is if you hang up after an hour and redial it gives someone else a chance to grab the 'path' you were using though part of the network and helps prevent contention issues popping up.
Correct, one example I was given was so people would not use it as a baby monitor Yes there are parents out there that would do it.

Why on earth is this causing so much confusion? Surely it will be clearly stated in NTL's billing literature so that there is no misunderstanding over when you get charged for making 60 minute + calls on talk plans? ... hmm, no smiley for tounge-in-cheek...

My question is: what portion of the call do you get charged? i.e. if I'm on Talk Unlimited 24 and I spend 100 minutes on a call, do I get charged for a 40 minute call, or a 100 minute call?

40 minutes are charged in your example.

Per http://www.ntl.com/home/telephone/pdf/TelcoTariff.pdf page 3:
Redial before 60 minutes to avoid call charges (after which a 3p per minute charge will apply)

Are you on Talk Unlimited Local or on 321?

The only tariff that distinguishes NTL-to-NTL local calls is the old 321. This is no longer available to new customers.

Good man! I'll pay more attention to my tariff guide in future!
