Yup, go to http://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi/dial and follow the instructions. You'll need to be on an ntl telephone line.

Not as such. There is a pay-as-you-go service available to offnet customers, but you have to pay £9.99/month for access to the telephone network as well. See www.ntlfreedom.com for details. It's known as Freedom Choice, and includes £15 of telephone or Internet calls for that £9.99.

a friend of mine uses the internet hardly at all

occasional check of an e-mail
say a couple of hours a week tops

any suggestions for cheap access

I know £15/month is not a kings ransom
