V+ recording to Panasonic DMR-EX75

Hi All

Hope you can help, as I have tried all I can think of to resolve this one

I have the V+ box connected to a Toshiba TFT tv via HDMI & am trying to
copy some of the recordings to the Panasonic from the V+ using SCART.
to put onto DVD.

The picture from the Panasonic to the TV [also via HDMI] is as good if not better than the V+ for off air & DVD playback [altho not HD 'o corse]

I can get the picture, but the quality is a lot lower that the original picture, with smearing and graininess [is that a word?]

I believe I am using a fully wired 'gold' plated SCART lead.

I seemed to have the same issue with a non V+ NTL/Virgin set top box - could the input on the Panasonic be faulty, is my SCART not up to the job - I have several and did not have this problem with other devices using these leads.

Anyone out there have a similar setup? Is there any other way of getting the
recordings off the V+ box - short of removing the HDD & copying it manually - does the eSATA connection work?

Thanks in advance

Nick

Re: V+ recording to Panasonic DMR-EX75

HI a few of reasons why the quality may not be as good.

1, When recording by scart the picture is sd and not up scaled.

2, What quality are you recording to on the dvd the more hours you can record on the dvd the lower the quality.

3 ,A copy of a copy will always be poorer than the original.

4, Welcome to the forum.

Re: V+ recording to Panasonic DMR-EX75

Hi

Thanks for the response & the welcome.

The poor picture is when I am viewing the image on the Panasonic before recording.

The BBC3 logo for example last night was a fetching pink, solid on the pic from the V+ to the TV, but made up of obvious diagonal lines when viewed through the Panasonic.

The image on the HDD of the V+ is SD I understand - is there really that much signal loss?

What is the difference between RGB & Video signals, a setting for te input on the Panasonic - could this be the problem? [I cannot get an RGB signal.]

Is it deliberate - to prevent backup of saved programmes?

If I connect the V+ to the Panasonic through the TV out SCART of the V+ will that provide a better picture? Have to lose the HDMI for that though.

Blimey! lots of questions, any help would be appreciated.

Re: V+ recording to Panasonic DMR-EX75

This is the exact same setup I have, and it works just great.

Seems to me that your problem is that you're not getting an RGB signal; I have mine connected using RGB and get very good PQ.

Have you tried using a different Scart lead? Have you checked that your V+ is set to output RGB? Have you checked that your Panny is set to RGB on the input?

You shouldn't need to connect the Scart lead into the TV out socket, though it might be worth trying to isolate a problem with your lead or VCR out socket on your V+.

I would suggest the most likely culprit though is either a dodgy scart lead, or just incorrect config in the menu somewhere.

Great! thanks for that, at least I now know the setup should work.

So either the cable is bad [looks ok, time to get the meter out] or the Output from the V+ is bad - but get same with another Virgin box - or the panny in broken [its not worked for a while, but is now out of warranty]

That I dont know how to test, but finding something that does take RGB & seeing if that works is probably a start

Here's to faulty cables - hopefully

Thanks again

Best Rgds

You could try connecting the V+ to your TV using the suspect Scart and see if that works with RGB as a start.

Re: V+ recording to Panasonic DMR-EX75

Righto.

The OP is using HDMI from V+ -> TV. The 'VCR' scart will only kick out nasty composite video in this mode, hence the PQ concerns the OP has. The only way to avoid this is to set the V+ to SCART output with RGB and run this 'through' the recorder to the TV. However, you will lose the ability to view HD, and you'll be relying on the upscaling in TV as opposed to the V+.

AFAIK, there's no way to get RGB out of the VCR scart.

Hope this helps.
