the old hard drive was only 5400 rpm which i found to be odd as that speed is mostly found in laptop HDD and some old servers
the newer 10000 rpm are not much good for DVR as you could get data lose.

Re: V+ recordings! I am at end of my tether
in that case 7200 rpm would seem like the better choice then.

they now use units with 7200rpm hard drives

and have noticed with 7200rpm it seems better at recording the HD

You do realise you do not own the V+ and cannot modify it in any way? If you do and Virgin find out, they will make you pay to replace it

I'm sorry but do you have *any* idea what you are talking about? Faster drives = less reliability? Of course that why all the work servers have new 15K disks in isn't it?

true plus recorders used for CCTV use time slip so that you can record a stupid amount of hours, which the V + receiver clearly cant so to compare the two is unfair.

Re: V+ recordings! I am at end of my tether
DVR drives have considerably less files to handle than a regular PC drive but are also considerably larger - so the usage of regular PC drive and DVR drive are quite different - DVR drive doesn't need the same seek speed/capability but needs to read relatively massive files - PC drive usually blocks of 1k whereas DVR often use blocks of maybe half-meg

Re: V+ recordings! I am at end of my tether
i was talking about Hard Disk Drives - the difference between Hard Disk Drives on a regular PC and Hard Disk Drives on a Digital Video Recorder (such as V+)

There's no such thing as a PC Hard Drive! - It's a just hard disk drive!
Specifications of HDD's were being discussed - I was high-lighting the huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge difference in the HDD usage in PC as opposed to HDD usage in PVR - which just might shine some light on the subject
I can see i might now have to use lengthly legal jargon in future
.

Re: V+ recordings! I am at end of my tether
I seem to remember being told that the spin'n up and down of the hard drives is worse than one in constant use. I've had 2 drives go on the TIVO in 6 years and they are on 24/7. I would class that as not to bad going....but I've always replaced with 5400 speed to cut down on heat and noise.
