Welcome to the forum.
If you have no roof ariel, then you would need and analogue bypass to receive cable 1-5 analogue. (teletext is an analogue service) Your previous stb probably had one attached or built in.

Re: Loss of Teletext
I take it the roof Ariel is plugged into the box? If not that would be the reason

Re: Loss of Teletext
I do not think you can plug RF into V+, then again I may be totally wrong. Thsi is NOT unusual.
I am hard op fhearing, and get the subtitles fine through V+, but as i understand it there is no Teletext. You have to kick your TV into RF mode to get Teletext.
What surprises me is that there is no subtitles on BBC HD. I just wonder if bandwith restricts this service. A good pair of Sennheiser headphones into Panasonic TV, solves my hearing issues, but I do rely on subtitiles.

Re: Loss of Teletext
Teletext is an analogue service - it's not on digital.
I know a lot of customers who don't have an aerial, but with the pace stb's could get terrestrial through it and teletext. (Generally, they phone to complain when the silver samsung box they demanded for wiped them all off when installed.) Hmm.

Not correct. There is a digital version transmitted with Freeview (it's great).

Teletext is data put onto the vertical blanking interval, HD does not have a VBI. Subtitling is also VBI teletext data.
The standards people are still looking at how subtitling can be done with HD. Sky have developed their own method for HD subs for now.

Re: Loss of Teletext
The lack of teletext is so annoying. Relying on BBCi is an absolute waste of time.

Yes - I find this a pain too. I had only recently got used to using the Freeview teeletext system - which is great.

Thanks for heads up, I thought there was some technical reason for it but had no idea what the reason was.
The BBCi stuff...where is it on V+ I hit red button, it trundles along with a 'loading' info....then zilch happens.
My RF aerial is a problem where I live, so anything with info, even BBC i would be a bonus.

Re: Loss of Teletext
Although getting used to various combinations of terrestrial, digital analogue & altering cable boxes is a palaver, on current V+ box a form of teletext CAN be accessed, although using e.g. Freeview versions or expiring analogue formats is nicer - especially as IMO Virgin COULD easily link current redundant TEXT button on R/C to:
a) via (on my current) R/C HOME blue button ...
b) select INTERACTIVE
c) select TV EXTRAS
d) select e.g. BBC = BBC digital Teletext.
We had our new V+ HD thing installed end of January 2008 because of £75 offer and we like it, especially as it's black.
We too have the ancient '1.- ' versions of software, and await any possible new effective versions which might eradicate the sound drop-outs on some 'Tattoo' channel recordings. So far we have not felt need to record anything from V+ to DVD or VHS etc, but obviously we tested that it works (we use a Topfield PVR for sending recordings to PC for processing).
We were surprised that V+ does not record audio-radio channels, but we like many have other means.
Although a bit of HD is nice, it is not necessary, as ordinary upscaled V+ is jolly good enough. We still have bought no discs for our Blu-ray player etc (PS3) as they are all too overpriced.
In our opinion as cable enjoyers for 10 years V+ despite ongoing bugs is jolly good.
