Sorry, but this does not follow at all. Compression does not mean that volume levels are necessarily lower.

You're correct - it was late (early).

It's do to with the wider dynamic range of DD compared to PCM and the problems inherent in the volume levels, which are geared towards the quieter stuff (dialogue) as opposed to the louder stuff (explosions etc), hence why it sounds quieter.

That's the plain vanilla version, anyhoo.... Google for more exciting details about -27 dB and so on
