No HDMI signal

Hi all, i've just found this excellent forum while trying to solve a problem, i have looked through many informative threads here but cant find if anyone has had this problem, so any advice or direction to a thread would be much appreciated.

I have just bought a samsung 37" lcd tv, it works on 720p for hdtv or so the salesman at comet said. When i got it home i connected my v+ box to the tv using my newly purchased HDMI cables and scart leads.
When i reboot my v+ box to HDMI 720p (using the buttons on the front of the box method) then switch my tv source to HDMI the samsung gives me the message "mode not supported"
The tv works using the scart, so i tried to set the v+ box using the "on-screen" method but it always asks me if i want to "test" the setting and when i do, the screen flashes to hdmi source, flickers for a few seconds and then reverts to EXT1 using the scart.
I did e-mail samsung and they replied saying i could try changing the video output resolution, i assume they mean the setting i have already tried as i know of no other setting i can try.
thanks for reading if you got this far any suggestions that might help ?

Unlike scart HDMI is not autoswitching, i.e. the TV doesn't change over itself to the HDMI signal from a scart based picture. You need to do that manually. If you have two HDMI ports on your TV, that confuses the issue, as you'll need to know which one to select.

When testing settings for the HDMI, remember that the scart output is disabled the moment you as the V+ to send a HD picture. If your TV is still tuned to the scart port during this time, that would explain the flickering of picture you describe.

If you have more than one HDMI port on your TV, make sure you are selecting the correct one to screen.

You need to press the TEXT key on the V+ remote to save the new setting before it reverts.

If you get stuck without a picture, use the front panel method to set it back to "Sd"

Re: No HDMI signal

no luck so far, i have three hdmi sockets on the samsung and each one displays the same "mode not supported" message when i change the v+ box to hdmi 720.
Pressing the text button does keep the setting to hdmi but for some reason my tv does not want to receive this setting, surely the samsung is capable of operating with a v+ box ?

Re: No HDMI signal

Here is a link to the spec for your TV. This info should also be in your manual.

http://electronics.pricegrabber.co.u...98238/details/

Under the "broadcast standards" heading it lists the following
1080i
480i
480p
576i & 576p
720p

The V+ box can be set to output at 720p or 1080i and so your TV should accept either of these 2 settings.
Look in the TV user manual - maybe you have to tell the TV which setting you are using as well as setting the V+ box.

I have looked at an online version of your manual and at the bottom of page 5 there is a table showing which modes are compatible. It says that 720p and 1080i are OK so I'm not sure why you are having a problem.

not really, when i set the v+box to hdmi 1080i the tv allows me to access the tv menu, whereas when the v+ box was set to hdmi 720p the menu would show for a few seconds then disappear. To me this would indicate some sort of recognition, but there's still no sound or picture and a "mode not supported" or "no signal" message.
I am wondering as you suggest could there be a fault with the leads (brand new £44 :-( from comet) or even the v+ box which is over 12 months old and made by scientific atlanta, branded "telewest broadband- tv drive"

---------- Post added at 17:30 ---------- Previous post was at 17:24 ----------

just to add, samsung support have replied and confirmed that the tv should work fine on 720p and 1080i, i think another call to 150 is imminent.

Re: No HDMI signal

Ok the VM bloke just left my house, he had tested it with a scart and then left. im trying to use it with an HDMI cable, my tv supports 720 1080 but 1080 comes tiny in the middle of the screen and same with 720, currently using 720 wide seems fine.. however i cant get any sound to come out of my cinema system, its connected how it was before but only sound from the tv is coming out!

Re: No HDMI signal

Why did you let him leave without sorting things out? Sounds like you're doing everything through the scart now, so try and sort it out yourself by changing to HDMI via the menu (HOME on your remote) and then settings and then display and audio. Now set TV display format to HiDEF HDMI and VBox connection to 720 or 1080. Press OK on remote and then follow instructions on screen. Don't forget to press text button on remote when instructed on the screen.
You must have the V+box and tv connected via an HDMI cable before you start of course!
When it's all working you can remove the scart cable.
