so just connected up my new HDTV, and all the channels are fine (well the ones that are widescreen) but the EPG is in 4:3 and only takes up half the screen. is this right, im browsing the TV guide with massive black lines either side

When I was browsing the EPG on my TV (even though I couldnt get a PC (HDCP and all that)) it was smaller than normal, and looked like 4:3, so I assume its right.
This is correct behaviour for the V+ box. The guide will only fill the screen if you use the 'wide' options as Fubar correctly states. However, non-widescreen pictures will then be stretched to fit, and people will look rather porky.
