V+ and channel 5 problems.

I live in the wessex region and BH17 area of Poole. I've had V+ installed for just over two weeks and everthing was great for the first week. Then one evening Channel 5 started to drop the sound and the picture would block up with lots of coloured square every few seconds(this has now changed to sound dropouts, freezing and blanking ever couple of seconds with the occasional bit of blocking). I tried viewing the channel live but it was the same. I've reset the box and did a hard reset via the on/off switch but i still got the same fault. The strange thing is that most of the other channels seem unaffected by this problem.

I called up faults and the guy could not tell me if this was a local fault or my V+ box was faulty as he was not able to find channel 5 on his terminal to see if there was any outstanding faults in my area. After a few minutes he gave up and booked a technician to have a look on Sunday.

The technician arrived Sunday and as soon as he walked in he said that there was a problem with V+ boxes and channels working on the high frequencies which happen to include channel5, some ITV channels and more 4 e.t.c and that faults should have told me about this.

To give him his dues he then said that he would check everything out just in case and proceeded to connect up a box to the TV and check all the signals out,he then checked the wiring to the inside junction box and the small box outside. Having exhausted the possibilies that there was anything wrong with the V+ box or the installation he said that Virginmedia were aware of the problem and that he would log my fault as unresolved and that he could not give me any time scale in which it would be fixed but when it was i would get a call back form customer support.

I've looked on the service status page but i can't see any faults open for this problem.
Is there anyone in the same area having the same problems as me ?
What am i to do next, just wait until the problem gets solved ?
Should i escalate this with faults if it's not been fixed by the weekend?

Re: V+ and channel 5 problems.

Give VM what you consider to be a reasonable time to fix your issue, say a few days maybe, and if they don't bother then dump the service for one that works.
Remember that they have already sent their engineer and he has not escalated the fault so it's likely they have already expended their best shot.

Re: V+ and channel 5 problems.

Sounds to me like some kind of signal issue. Last October we had about 5 different engineers out, which resulted in the end, with us having both of our pace boxes switched for samsungs. This then solved the problem.

Have a look in technical info of your v+ box, are there lots of errors in the error log?

Im not too sure what the recommended signal level is for any set top boxes, if someone knows, tell us

Hmm... In Poole, Five is on the lowest frequency. Do More4 and ITV4 also break up? They are on the same frequency.

Normally V+ is the box which is most tolerant of poor signal levels. You might have got a bad box, but I still think its more likely to be a signal level problem.

Call Faults again and get someone else out to look at it.

I'm in BH12 (Bournemouth) and have no problems with Channel 5. Hope you get it fixed soon.

Re: V+ and channel 5 problems.

Phoned up faults this morning from work and they said that there had been an issue with channel 5 e.t.c but that it was fixed and was now closed. They have arranged for another technician to have a look at the weekend.

Having said that when i got in from work this evening i found that channel 5 is now ok and my broadband connection had been rebooted which usually means that work has been carried out somewhere along the line. I'll phone them up to cancel the appoinment once i've had an extended viewing tonight.

Thanks for all your help and thanks to Virginmedia who have been great with fixing me up with appointments when it convenient for me.

Before you cancel your call, set simultaneous recordings on More4 and ITV4, then watch Five while they are recording. Then check both recordings. This makes sure all three of your tuners can tune to that frequency ok.
