Poor Recording Quality

A number of programs (but not all) suffer from a break up of picture (blocks etc) and loss of sound. This usually happens for a few minutes mid program. If for forward on a minute of two clears up.

It seems to happen a lot on ITV and normally after 30 mins or so.

Anybody had a similar problem and resolved?

Re: Poor Recording Quality

Hi

Interesting - almost exactly the same problems I've been having since V+ installed - as you say particularly on ITV1 (and strangely very frequent during attempting to record Coronation Street between 7.30 and 8 p.m. in evenings - maybe box doesn't like soaps!)

I have also had recordings where they start with totally blank screen then just random blocks of colour - totally unwatchable.

Engineer coming out Saturday to replace box (although I have strange feeling it has something to do with signal quality/strength).

Do you have any other set top boxes?

Re: Poor Recording Quality

Mainly the Bill on ITV for me!

Yes, I had a second box installed* recently under the VIP package that I don't use. I'll switch it off and see if it makes a difference.

*(Virgin would only give me the discount if I had a second box installed even though I didn't want it!)

Re: Poor Recording Quality

We have one V+ box and two additional standard set top boxes. My understanding is that because there is only one cable coming into the house, various splitters have to be used to feed all the boxes, when splitters are used the signal strength is decreased.

Whereabouts roughly are you based (we're in the Worthing area, BN12) - the reason I ask is it may be a local problem.

It has been suggested to me that one of the 3 tuners in the V+ box may be faulty - there is no way of knowing that the same tuner is being used for recording the same programme - hence why sometimes it may work and sometimes it may not - just a theory.

Re: Poor Recording Quality

I'll switch off my second box and see if it resolves.

Re: Poor Recording Quality

Quick update.

Switching off the second box seemed to improve things for a while but had the same problem recently. Mainly BBC1 and ITV around 8 - 9pm.

Any ideas?

Re: Poor Recording Quality

Have not yet upgraded to V+, so cannot comment directly. However, worst problems seem to be at peak viewing hours - I wonder if network loading is a factor. I know that heavy loading can cause signal quality/levels to drop and I believe that the V+ boxes are very sensitive to this.
