Question HMDI Menus but no picture

Hi

I have just got an HDMI to component converter so that I will be able to watch HD on demand movies on my projector which only has component connections on it. I know there isn't much available at the moment but this is intended as a longer term solution - hopefully...

I can get the menus (which incidentally scale much better at 1080 than using the component outputs at 1080 from the back of the V+) and can get a picture

a) for a couple of seconds when bringing the V+ back out of standby

or

b) when changing to HDMI from component in the settings menu until pressing the Text button when the small in menu picture disappears.

I've tried changing the ends of the HDMI cable around as suggested in some other threads but this makes no difference.

The projector auto detects the resolution correctly so I can't change the settings on the projector as has been suggested in other threads for HD ready TVs.

Is this to do with the V+ not seeing the HDMI converter as an HDMI device?

If so I'll need to send the convertor back as it's not a trivial cost.

Re: HMDI Menus but no picture

What you describe is how the V+ box behaves when it detects that the attached HDMI device does not support HDCP. The V+ refuses to play video through a non-HDCP display.

Re: HDMI Menus but no picture

So does that mean that there is no way that my projector will ever be able to display On Demand HD movies?

If so it puts a limit on its future life because watching HD movies is, in my view, going to be the major initial selling point for HD and where I would expect the HD content to appear in the first instance (along with sport).

I did ask if it would work specifically for this purpose, and specifically about HDCP, prior to buying the device but I knew there was a chance that the salesperson didn't really know the correct answer.

I though I'd try it in any case, having checked the returns policy!

Thanks for your help again Robin .

Re: HMDI Menus but no picture

I had a V+ box which only showed the menus, no video. Like you I could get a second or two of video. I even got a new lead off eBay. Turned out to be a fault with the V+ box. Don't assume the V+ box is a worker unless you can test it with a suitable TV...

Re: HDMI Menus but no picture

That would be my only other option. I had considered this but finding someone to lend me an HDTV for a few minutes might prove difficult! Any offers ?

I could buy a small screen then return it when I have tested it, I suppose.

In such a situation I would normally take the offending device to another house to try it but, of course, I can't do that with a V+ stb.

I know that the V+ has been replaced for others on here due to this fault and so ideally I should find a way to work out if it is the box. mmm, thinks......

Re: HMDI Menus but no picture

I want to test the hdmi to component converter before I return it. I know someone with a Sky+ box (but not an HD subscription) so would the SD content from Sky+ require an HDCP compliant HDMI connection.

If not then I won't gain anything from trying the converter on their system.

If Sky+ does require hdcp to be enabled then what would I expect to see if the converter isn't hdcp compliant?

I don't want to alter the settings on the Sky+ box and screw up the OPs tv setup!
